wonder if there’s something to the evangelical -> emergent -> mainline pipeline.

People forget - he was Biden’s biggest fan from early primaries in 2020 up until probably 2023. He repeatedly said he should and will run for re-elections etc.

IMO this is a misreading. he never supports GOP explicitly. He just treats them as having no agency, being spoiled toddlers that they are. That only leaves you with criticizing democrats which he does deliberately. But when push comes to shove I don’t see him ever endorsing a gop candidate over a d.

Sometimes I feel like KW is subtweeting him on his BSky account lol. But they genuinely seem to like each other so that’s great.

Barro sr is fine lol. His macro panel data are great for teaching econometrics.

He was great on Left Right Center and I pay for his show with Popehat. The other purely political one I can’t stand 🤷‍♂️

I’ve always liked JB and of all the pundits I find him least objectionable. But you can’t escape the double curse of brain rot of X AND the deadly disease of chronic contrarianism. I still think his economic analyses are some of the best out there from a journalist.

Remove conservative justices and pack the courts!
The guy is a radical interested primarily in grabbing power, to wield it against the other side.
This is sadly, what partisans on both sides seek.

Conservatives played political hardball to reshape the court and then act surprised when liberals treat it as a political branch.
Why wouldn't they?

Among many other things, it is absurd that a 50% +1 vote can amend the Virginia Constitution.

The whining from Republicans here is just preposterous. Democrats remain willing to prohibit gerrymandering nationally.
Republicans thought they were better off fighting this battle state-by-state and are sore that that wasn't true.

Anyway since the Virginia-resident class of conservative journalists and operatives have personally come out on the short end of the stick on this redistricting fight, perhaps they can push their party to negotiate a national gerrymandering ban.
Dems are ready to take the call.

2006 was wild. The vast majority of Democratic gains in the House were rural districts. The Dems flipped three seats in *Indiana* alone. By contemporary standards, that election might of well taken place on the moon

This would imply that Russian can’t read between the lines of a diplomatic document. And it wasn’t a shared goal of all parties back in 08! That’s why the statement was vague and noncommittal! Americans wanted clear and explicit path with timelines. Germans and French did not.

everyone should read her Putin’s Russia from 2003 that showed what a disaster his regime will become at a time when he was still considered a pro-western reformer.

If we appease them they’ll attack us, if we don’t appease them they’ll attack us. 🤷‍♂️

I’m sorry but from the coverage at the time it was considered a clear snub that they won’t be joining and MAP was a consolation price. Finland and Sweden are absolutely not typical cases you can apply elsewhere. (Eg Iceland and Switzerland could join EU in 6 months. Doesn’t mean Macedonia could).

Beside, I’m extremely uncomfortable with the principle that a rogue state can dictate how free nations can associate otherwise it’ll drop nukes on all of us. Literally “isn’t there someone you forgot to ask” meme come to life.

And theses about insulting their pride, or rubbing their noses in it etc are exactly what Putin was saying about western triumphalism in RU during the 90s. When in reality we’ve saved their asses.

It seems to me the arguments in support of your view are identical to those in 08. But the world has changed dramatically since then. Everyone realizes by now Russia is not a rational actor.

Haven’t we had this discussion since Bucharest 2008? We can’t allow Ukraine/Georgia to join NATO because it’ll upset Russians and they’ll invade. Well, we didn’t invite them to join, and Russians still invaded. Georgian war started mere months after the summit, and Ukrainian war 5 years later.

I’m v confused about this. Why isn’t he aiming to just be an acceptable conservative bishop? He has his publishing empire. He doesn’t need to be hardcore MAGA. If anything it hurts his brand to be perceived that way.

“net drain on society” is an eliminationist rhetoric and yet another data point on how GOP is an eliminationist organization and a danger to free society.

I get folks 4 generations removed from their Irish/Polish/Italian ancestors benefiting from open borders, but imagine having a memory of wet foot, dry foot policy and voting for T. Remember how much they hated Obama for removing their little snowflake exemption from immigration law?

Stefanik would get more pushback from Jake if she was defending Biden’s mental health than when she’s defending genocide.

Western intelligentsia hasn’t had an opportunity to think about transitional justice in the same way since the fall of communism!

As the evil of populism is hopefully in retreat, it’ll be fascinating to see who among its intellectual underwriters begins to realize their own contributions, when they do it, and how.
