Super proud of @sjoerdmeijer.bsky.social who demonstrated that amygdala-TUS slows initial threat acquisition and enhances subsequent extinction. Great collaboration with @lennartverhagen.bsky.social and @deVoogdld.bsky.social ea. Thanks to @ERC.europa.eu.

Meet our final keynote speaker for APCV & EPC 2026!
Dr Corey Wadsley from the University of Auckland will present a keynote lecture titled "Stopping safely: Physiological underpinnings of response inhibition."
Andrew Mckay standing at the front of the room In front of his slides as he presents his work for BEPSI at the University of Queensland.
Dr Will Harrison standing in front of a screen projector which displays images of 6 horror film villains as he presents for BEPSI at the University of Queensland.
Our meetings are growing! 💗
34 people joined us on Wednesday arvo for two intriguing talks: neurophys evidence accumulation processes during decision making from Andrew McKay, followed by a psychophys dive into studying the dimensionality of scary faces @willjharrison.bsky.social 💀

Super excited for today's meeting! @willjharrison.bsky.social will join us fresh from the glorious Sunshine Coast, alongside UQ's Andrew Mckay. Join us in person today at 4pm or via Zoom - DM us your email address & we'll send the password 🤩

Four panels showing how an image of a kiwi fruit can be filtered to understand contrast energy.
So @reubenrideaux.bsky.social and I decided to run an image-processing workshop at this year's EPC/APCV. We will be teaching people how to compute the contrast energy of kiwi fruit, I guess. Sign up now: visualneuroscience.auckland.ac.nz/epc-apcv-2026/

Second up was @tgastrell.bsky.social whose research explored whether neural tuning depends on the precision of learned priors using a visual dot motion paradigm...
Macro photo of a brown stink bug in face view on a leaf, guarding a tightly-clustered bunch of eggs that are shaped and colored exactly like a full tray of dark beer with foam on top.
Finally, the bug is back with a round of the Guinness.
Slide from Tim Cottier's presentation which says 'Super recognisers are more sensitive to expression' with plots showing the results
Fantastic presentation from @tvcottier.bsky.social kicking off our first meeting for 2026. His recent work suggests super-recognisers prioritise identity cues in faces over other dimensions, & that expressive cues interfere with them - suggesting these processes are not independent
🤣
**Postdoc position in human category learning**
@thecharleywu.bsky.social, Frank Jäkel and I are seeking a postdoctoral fellow to lead a joint project on human category learning at the Centre for Cognitive Science @tuda.bsky.social.

Why do children struggle to recognise objects in cluttered scenes more than adults? Our new paper looks at the development of visual acuity and crowding across childhood, and the way the visual system fine tunes our ability to see detail: www.nature.com/articles/s41...

We're seriously considering ways to do this going forward, but not sure we'll have that in place for this week's meeting. Would be a great way to maintain connections with local researchers who are now abroad ☺️ 🤞
To mark the 80th anniversary of the Experimental Psychology Society, we invite proposals for a special anniversary symposium reflecting on the current state of experimental psychology and its future trajectory.
Please see below for information on how to submit a proposal!

Program for the Brisbane Experimental Psychology Student Initiative meeting at 4pm, Wednesday 25th February at The University of Queensland. Featuring Timothy Cottier, Postdoctoral Fellow, Western Sydney University, presenting 'Evidence that super-recognisers spontaneously and preferentially process face-identity information' and Tim Gastrell, PhD Student, Queensland Brain Institute presenting 'Neural tuning to visual motion depends on the precision of learned priors'.
Our first meeting for 2026 is just 5 days away!
To kick things off we have 2 awesome Tims presenting their research @tvcottier.bsky.social & @tgastrell.bsky.social

I just created a series of seven deep-dive videos about AI, which I've posted to youtube and now here. 😊
Targeted to laypeople, they explore how LLMs work, what they can do, and what impacts they have on learning, well-being, disinformation, the workplace, the economy, and the environment.
Maths! And Brains! In Melbourne!! Swoon 🧠
ECRs, you only have until 20th Feb to submit your abstracts. Registration is free (but you must attend) & prizes awarded to the highest quality posters and flash talks.
