Chinese economic success relies on massive state subsidies
• Chinese government is spending heavily on critical industrial sectors to cement global market shares
• Tax breaks, cheap land and heavy investment on education (esp. in scientific fields) also contribute to model

“One can envision a post-Trump world where tensions between the US & EU are dialed down. But we won’t return to anything resembling the transatlantic relationship of past decades. The damage that has been done in a single year has been enormous" @fbermingham.bsky.social

A bombshell new report reveals that top military officials have kept Trump out of the room during Iran war operations because they fear his erratic behavior will put troops in harm’s way.

A helpful move for European strategic autonomy in space:
"The French MoD has made a definitive strategic choice, formally selecting [Franco-British] Eutelsat's OneWeb constellation as the primary connectivity backbone for its armed forces until at least 2030."

I would very much like it to be part of the danish airforce as well.
Ukraine’s Ministry of Defense has set an ambitious goal to transition up to 100% of frontline logistics to robotic systems.
To meet new target, Ukraine’s MoD plans to contract 25,000 UGVs in the first half of 2026, twice as many as were contracted throughout all of 2025.
Young Palestinian children are prevented from going to school after Israeli settlers - with the tacit approval of the Israeli state - blocked their path with a barbed-wire fence. Instead, they are forced to sit in the boiling heat to continue their education.
3. European military deployment to Greenland in Jan/Feb could be seen as a deterrence and a provocation by Trump
4. After another fiasco in Iran, Trump will be looking for a foreign policy win.

1. With several NATO members denying US the right to use their air bases for the war in Iran, Trump might reignite the claim than he needs ownership rather than permission to use Greenland.
2. Worsening relationship with NATO allies.
Germany insisted on delaying phase out of combustion engine. Iran war caused energy shock, et voilà:
BYD was one of the fastest-growing brands in Germany in Q1, with a 135% rise in purchase queries for the Chinese EV heavyweight during that period.

I'm old enough to be able to miss George Bush Senior. Although I disagree with much of the then Republican views (but Im European, so much of it doesnt affect me), but GB Senior was uniquely well qualified and choose very competent people around him.
America's cultural domination over European entertainment and news media has made Europeans know more about US politics & government than they do about the EU, their neighbours' politics, and sometimes (for Gen Z) even their own.

❗️US officials warned European allies of delays in weapons deliveries due to stockpile strain from the Iran conflict. The impact is expected to affect several countries, including Baltic and Nordic states. If this also affects Ukraine, is unclear. #US
Ammunition works best if it is safely stored in a box and never used until it becomes obsolete. The best cyber defence is sufficiently secure that adversaries do not test it with expectation of success. Military personnel are trained to kill and are genuine heroes if they never have to put the training into practice.
Well put.

Must-read on how most (but not all, tagging @anderspucknielsen.dk again) experts got it wrong on Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, and what this should teach us about future predictions, esp re China and Taiwan
Too many people seem to accept the argument that while it is terrible for other countries to kill civilians in war, when their own country does it, it can be justified.
Explains much of the strategic and ethical disaster we are facing.

"The reason Russia is struggling to make progress on the front line is not that Russia is weak, but that Ukraine is very strong".
I think way to many people are missing this point.

Prof. Justin Bronk essentially spending 30 min laying out exactly how incompetent IQ47 and "lieutenant" Dumdum in the white house are on the Iran fiasko.
In usual British style.
Europe's former top diplomat, @FedericaMog, and @SahilV_Shah write in a vindicated tone that the JCPOA was not pursued because of naivete. But because we "understood that the alternative to diplomacy is the chaos and destruction playing out now."

34… 4… what’s a little exaggeration of 30 ships amongst friends?
(4 ships transited yesterday)
Notable.
Yet again, the only aggression or interference Chancellor Merz and President von der Leyen can bring themselves to name out loud is that coming from Russia.
Yet again, America goes unnamed and we have to read between the lines. www.theguardian.com/world/live/2...
Huge investment in renewables is partly insulating China from global energy shocks
• Renewable energy, with no commodity imports, accounts for ~50% of China's energy mix
• Focus on electrification is further boosting China's ability to withstand global energy shocks

the next autocrat shows up... And the whole mess will start all over again, and we will have the same discussions again, but we will have wasted potentially years doing nothing about the real problem.
My concern with the Hungarian election is that "the symptom" has been addressed, eg. Orban is gone, but the "illness" is still there: The Unanimity Requirement in so many areas. I fear that the perceived need for constitutional change will fade away because "see.. we don't need it". Just until
I'm the suspecious type. Orban has conceded, but he is still in power. I believe it when a new government with control over police and army is in power. Not one second before.
