So I see the 90s through the lens of this utter sincerity and earnestness (which had helped bring down the Berlin Wall...) slamming into the Simpsons' irony and post-Soviet cynicism, in which everything is already a joke and punchline. Now 90s lines in the sand have cement-hardened considerably.
But enough about me:
The 90s had this parallel thing in which social progress was *clearly* being made and celebrated, but *holy hell* were both mainstream media and friend groups saturated with bigotry and slurs. The "norm" that far-right GenX-ers want to return to is represented in those words.
But up until the WTO protests in 1999 and the subsequent fallout for the Left and corporate America, there was a militancy in "getting the word out" to change the world that hadn't yet slammed into the psychic damage of the post-9/11 2000s, when every day felt cruel, murderous, and unhinged.

Already making notes for the next update, starting with all the touchpoints/inspirations I forgot when writing that part. Big ones: Malazan Book of the Fallen series; Frozen/Frozen 2; and the original Dragonlance trilogy.
