High-performance computing isn’t just about speed.
It changes how engineering work is structured and how complex decisions are explored.
I write about computational systems, governance, and technical stewardship.

Nice! Is the second from the left a donkey? Who gave that one out?

What are the specs on the x86 machines? I stopped by the booth today and asked about the mini cluster but the person there wasn't aware of the cluster.

Just wondering for those that follow me, do you use Google Gemini? I’m considering subscribing, but wondering what people use it for?

Happy New Year.

May 2025 bring us all: a large amount of love, enough hard work to make us proud, full-throated joy, the ability to grow.

And most of all, may it bring us the stamina to pause, or perchance to retreat for a bit, but never, ever to give up.

Happy New Year! Looking forward to another year of keeping HPC systems running and developing new strategies.

Chernobyl should be required viewing for SREa or anyone that deals with incidents in complex systems.

I presume ISO-NE is ISO New England. I know there are probably other areas of the country with more expensive power than us, but I've heard expensive power is why datacenters aren't usually built in NE. An exception would be MGHPCC. www.mghpcc.org

Those were the days of 1200 baud over the air, with latency measured around 8-15 seconds for RTT. The TCP/IP stacks were tuned to not time out due to the longer latency. I once downloaded a 300k pkzip installer in about 3-4 hours. Took a long time but was successful!

In the mid-90s, we had an amateur radio data repeater near me like this article mentions for TCP/IP. The system here in CT worked really well.

The Most Feature-Rich VoIP Provider for Businesses VoIP.ms is a customer-oriented Cloud PBX and SIP Trunk VoIP service provider offering competitive prices on a Pay-as-You-Go model.

Voip.ms is a great provider if you want low-cost VOIP services, but it is very much DIY with all the settings. Getting Groundwire and other VOIP clients to work take a bit of adjusting to get SIP-TLS to work, as there are a bunch of advanced settings to configure in both places.

On Giving Tuesday made some donations and renewed USENIX membership. I noticed the ATC '25 meeting will be in Boston next year. Might be able to attend that one!

I’ve always wondered this about professional society leaders. The number of conferences and events every week they attend while holding leadership positions at a company seem to be staggering. I don’t know how I’d get my work done.

I'm fine being atypical on these types of things. I've had home automation products stop working soon after the warranty is up. Not interested in paying lots of $$$ every few years just to have everything automated.

I think with the right venue more people are fine. I have thought that Denver and Dallas have been the best venues for me. This year was good, but tons more walking and having to go up and down escalators made it seem a bit more cumbersome than normal. Got my exercise in but really wiped out!

any experts on Bluesky know if I change my .bsky.social to a domain name, if I want to change the domain name in the future to another one or go back, does it mess up any links or references to the account?

Since I’m in industry, I haven’t used EDUroam. What is the advantage for academic users in signing into that network? Are you able to get back to your institution without using a VPN? Or if your device is already configured, you don’t have to sign in to the SC network? #hpc #sc24

Just finished volunteering at the SIGHPC booth. Always good to network with others and encourage students!

My advice would be to leverage the digital experience if a room is crowded, and if you want to meet with someone, schedule it before going to SC if possible. The conference is large so it is challenging to meet up.

I’ve found that turning off bluetooth when in packed sessions on a MacBook may save on CPU / energy usage. Not sure how much battery savings it provides, but was surprised how much the bluetoothd process starts to work. #sc24
