taking SMB3 physics and putting them into kitsune tails, a widescreen game, had people complaining they moved slower than in SMB3 even though they didn't, the wider screen just made it feel like they did

It’s absolutely incredible that one of the largest Japanese-run Go servers, which has been running since 1992, is still accessed entirely via Telnet. And while most players use GUI clients that use Telnet under the hood, you can still connect manually and get ASCII graphics streamed to you

The unfortunate thing about The Last of Us getting a gazillion remakes is that it's being forgotten how much of a technical marvel the original PS3 game was. We really got to see the endgame of PS3 where the Cell CPU architecture was pushed to its limit. This is a game console from 2006
The thing about actually making your video game real is that your projected imagination of what it will be is gradually substituted with concrete reality, and that reality is mostly going to be pretty bad until the game is almost finished. This is pretty heavy psychologically.

How to use your imagination When your party stays at the Inn overnight, what do they eat? If you ever catch yourself wondering that then you know you’ve formed an attachment to your characters. With Etrian Odyssey’s characters, you only give them a name and a portrait, so no matter how you think of the character it’s technically just your imagination. But even in that case, without your imagination, the character is nothing. For example, a landsknecht who uses an axe might eat his meat with his bare hands and no utensils, but one who wields a sword might prefer a knife and fork at dinner. You might think differently, but... if you can imagine small details like that, you might find that you enjoy this kind of RPG even more. The essense is an RPG is using numbers to make calculated decisions, but if you invest those “numbers” with your own feelings, you can spice up the game little. Think about this: In your party of five, three characters are dead. Two of them are alive, but they only have a couple of HP left and no TP. They’re certain to die in their next turn, giving you a game over. Number-wise, those characters are useless, but how do you imagine they feel about that? What kind of people are those 2 characters who are about to die? Try to imagine things like that in the brief time before your game ends. Are they a landsknecht and a ronin, who’ll die facing the enemy and laughing? Is it a protector, ordering the weak medic to run with his last breath? The game over screen looks the same every time, but in your imagination, it could play out very differently. The game itself isn’t that big of a thing; what you imagine for yourself is much more fun. We hope that the player uses this game as a tool, to create dramatic and fun situations in your own minds. —Kazuya Niinou
Been thinking about the use of imagination in video games lately, or how I feel there are few and increasingly fewer games that ask the player to use their imagination to engage with them.
This post Kazuya Niinou wrote to accompany Etrian Odyssey often comes to mind so I decided to remake it.
Yesterday, Google chose to remove Doki Doki Literature Club from the Google Play Store. Their explanation is that the game’s content violates their Terms of Service in its depiction of sensitive themes. DDLC is widely celebrated for portraying mental health in a way that meaningfully connects deeply with players around the world, helping them feel heard, understood, and less alone on their journey. Managing to achieve that—making a truly meaningful difference by using the power of fiction to connect to others—is what I’m most grateful for. It inspires me every day to keep making cool new things, things that can really reach others, especially those in need of connection. DDLC is available on many different major platforms, including iOS, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation, and more. We’re continuing to do everything we can to find a path forward for getting DDLC reinstated on the Google Play Store. Meanwhile, we’re also looking into potential options for alternate methods of distribution on Android devices. We worked hard to bring DDLC to Android, and we’ve gotten to see so much love and enthusiasm from passionate Android users over these past few months. Thank you so much to the community for continuing to express your love and support for DDLC through the years. We’ll keep you updated on the future of DDLC for Android. - Dan Salvato and the Serenity Forge Team
A statement regarding the removal of DDLC from the Google Play Store:
Hello @limitedrungames.com it has come to my attention that you've used mGBA in the release of Sigma Star Saga DX in an unlicensed capacity. Please rectify this immediately.
A third of the way through the Anachronox demo, the player encounters a hulking alien merchant. “My sorrow runs deep,” the merchant, whose name is Demonstrare, says. “I will only exist for the short duration of this demo. I do not exist in the full version. “Write the company. Tell them that you want me in the full version.” What Demonstrare, even with his curse of self-awareness, did not anticipate was that if anyone did ask Ion Storm to bring him over to “the full version,” it wouldn’t have mattered. The demo shipped on a disc stuck to the cover of a PC Gamer — where it shared space with now-forgotten
titles like Throne of Darkness and The Corporate Machine — four months after Anachronox itself had been released, and three months after Ion Storm’s parent company had shut down the studio. Demonstrare never made it to Anachronox. And while twenty-five years later the game can run on modern hardware, the demo does not. Demonstrare is gone. Recently, I asked Richard Gaubert, the writer of Anachronox, if the developers ever heard anything about Demonstrare. Gaubert didn’t even remember the character.
Here is a little bit of @duncanfyfe.net's afterword for "How Can We Bear to Throw Anything Away?"
I've seen this come up a few times at this point, so I'd like to clarify!
Serenity Forge published the console versions of Slay the Princess, but we (Black Tabby Games) developed the game.
Serenity Forge is developing Fractured Blooms internally, and we're not involved in that project! ^^
This genuinely might be one of my favourite things ever LMAO

A few games shift around every time I do one of these, but each of these games has affected my brain and how I approach games in a positive (*moderate volume incorrect buzzer*) way.

Have you ever used 3d posing tools (like the CSP models) in your workflow? I am trying to wean off them a bit because of how much time it takes up, but it's been a hard transition.
on one hand it's sad how the dungeon has kind of stopped existing as something to be explored and braved in rpgs (including mmorpgs) but also I can't even pin that one entirely on computer games because dnd ALSO lost interest in dungeoneering
These turned out so good!! 🙏
