Did you know that for the cost of one high-end digital embroidery machine, you could get an entire pack of robot dogs?

I just cannot stop thinking about it. Which would you choose?

Could it be reasonable to draw sweeping conclusions about a culture based on whether their old people play mahjong or bingo? 🀄️

The Two Failure Modes of High-Stakes Gatherings High-stakes gatherings push on things genuinely important to the people involved. Designing well for these moments means working with fear, not against it.

Even routine gatherings can become high stakes when they push on something deeply important to the people involved. When that happens, people behave differently as their protective instincts take over. The usual approaches to group dynamics can backfire. uncommonplaces.com/resources/tw...

Just subscribed to a print publication at full price for the first time in I don't know how long... a decade and a half maybe? You've got me hooked with an upcoming issue on risk. asteriskmag.com @asteriskmag.bsky.social

Every single language I've learned I can use back home in New York City. I just thanked the guy at the bodega counter in Nepali, a language I didn't even realize I remembered any of. I love it.

I probably already have "Photographs of the People of New York Who Look Like Birds" somewhere on my bookshelf. Looks so familiar.

Dense on the Page, Dead in the Room It's common to expect an event schedule to guide the event design process. This misconception can be seen even in a gathering that throws the agenda out completely.

One of the most common missteps I see when people design an event is to focus on the agenda. We think that if we organize time well, all else will follow.

This is so rarely the case.

I'm digging into the annual Anonymous Creative Futures report, just recently online. I really like everything that @metalabel.bsky.social is doing to create new infrastructure for creatives and artists. This stat jumped out at me. Lots of great things in the report.

fun fact! Last year, Zohran Mamdani's wikipedia page got more hits than Elon Musk's. Trump and the new Pope beat out both of them though.

Most Hackathons Are Poorly Designed. Here's What the Good Ones Get Right. I've attended a lot of hackathons over the past year and a half. They're a great way to explore new technology, meet interesting people, and test your skills under pressure.

I wrote a too-long post on designing better hackathons. I love hackathons and I'll keep going, but it pains me when they are really poorly designed.

Another good conversation with Tristian Harris, has me thinking about the challenge and application of foresight. (the convo gets better half way through, once he effectively cuts down the interviewer's inane belief in techno-utopian abundance)

Empathy Boxed In Plus News and Notes

Whoever does the creative direction for the Dumbo NYC BID has got some funky flair... The horse voice coming out of the construction cone Christmas tree gives me Beetlejuice vibes.

Also, seems like the "tree" itself might be a pirate radio tower? 🤷‍♀️🤔

The org I worked for said they couldn't back out because the deposit was non-refundable. I think finances were a big piece of the issue. Thankfully they let me and others not attend with no consequences.

I've lost friends to OneTaste and had to bail out of a work retreat accidentally programmed at a venue owned by OneTaste founders. Very glad @ellenhuet.bsky.social exposed the manipulation driving it. Here she is in convo with Jules Evans (www.ecstaticintegration.org).
