This is Cathy Rutherford, Glasgow born trade unionist. I love this clip, but even more for knowing that it stems from a core of lifelong political activism
This is absolutely fantastic.

The funny thing is these new "ai search" or less vulnerable to filter bubbles than regular Google. If you search for flat earth say you may get flat earther webpages... Ask a LLM even if you insist it will most certainly lecture you it's not true...ha
This whole ‘LLMs/GenAI are inherently sycophantic and will only give you what you want to hear and hence it cannot be used for retrieval meme is really oversold and librarians need to be careful not to fall for it (1)
We've got ISSUES. Literally.
We scraped >100k special issues & over 1 million articles to bring you a PISS-poor paper. We quantify just how many excess papers are published by guest editors abusing special issues to boost their CVs. How bad is it & what can we do?

Most of my last 2–3 years can be summed up by this post. The belief that information retrieval is going through a fundamental shakeup, librarians really need to study the nuts & bolts of IR to be helpful guides to our users. But sometimes I think I might be leading people on a quixotic quest (1)
Primo really goes into detail about the relevancy ranking behind the hood but I doubt even one in a hundred librarians have really looked at it. Even few fully understand it. knowledge.exlibrisgroup.com/Primo/Conten...

All of these problems will get better. In fact, I think some of these issues are currently due to computational/cost tradeoffs. If you let consensus, undermind use chatgpt PRO type computational cost, it might be better at source selection or reasoning about them.(5)
New post! We thought it would be fitting for #OpenAccessWeek to publish two new chapters of our exciting forthcoming #OpenAccess title Living with Machines, along with some learnings from this project so far.
