🧬 New genome alert! We’ve generated a chromosome-level assembly for the hydrozoan Podocoryna. With both polyp and free-swimming medusa stages, Podocoryna is a powerful model for exploring the evolution of complex traits in early animal lineages.

Florida Keys Cassiopea host benthos-like external microbiomes and a gut dominated by Vibrio, Endozoicomonas and Mycoplasma Interactions with microbial communities fundamentally shape metazoans’ physiology, development, and health across marine ecosystems. After many months and tears, my final thesis chap is in print! I found two really distinct pictures of a cnidarian microbiome, one from the body cavity and one from the external mucus layer :D journals.plos.org/plosone/arti...

Are you an early-career biologist or ecologist who would benefit from an invited seminar? Would you like to come to UMaine next fall or spring to give a talk? Leave a brief comment with some info about what you do. I'm co-hosting our seminar series again, and am filling out our rosters.

A bit of the opposite where you ID invasives instead of native, but for the USA invasives.org is decent. When you are on a species page it shows you a map of states with it on the state invasive list.

Have you ever seen #jellyfish eyes?
Here we have to two #Cladonema sp. medusae full of orange brine shrimp after feeding. If you look closely at the base of their tentacle bulb, you can see their tiny eye spots.

Our paper on myxozoan genomes is out now in G3! See thread below for a brief recap (slight change of title from the preprint, same content).

Thank you also to @arunsethuraman.bsky.social for handling the manuscript and @joannamasel.bsky.social for helpful comments.

The loss of these training programs is devastating. For over 20 years the University of Kansas alone has trained over 500 scholars in these programs - almost half of them from our local tribal college Haskell Indian National University. So much talent lost to science. I am broken.

I'm proposing a #SciArt Challenge for 2025!

Every month, make art of one of the animals that lives in your area. Post your work with the hashtag #NearbyNature2025 along with something you find interesting about them.

Bonus points for organisms that most of your neighbors won't know live close by!

Hey #SICB25 did you know jellyfish have eyes? From multiple convergent origins?? I’m using RNA-seq to see what’s going on in jellyfish eyes from a common origin but differing life history.

Stop by poster #P4-12 at 3:30-4:30pm in the Atrium Ballroom on Tuesday the 7th to hear more!🪼👀
