🚀 What we offer
Complementary expertise and field experimental platforms for drought research
Strong track record in nitrogen cycling, ecosystem ecology, and isotope biogeochemistry
A tenure-track position at the University of Bologna within 3 years after the fellowship
🌍 Fellowship structure
2 years outgoing phase (USA)
1 year return phase at the University of Bologna
✔️ Eligibility (MSCA Global Fellowship)
PhD awarded by the call deadline
Maximum 8 years of research experience (post-PhD)

European nationals or long-term residents (MSCA Global Fellowship eligibility)
This fellowship will be jointly supported by myself (www.unibo.it/sitoweb/albe...) and @petehomyak.bsky.social .
We bring complementary expertise and both manage field-based drought experiments, providing a strong platform for ambitious research.
📢 Call for Expression of Interest – Marie Skłodowska-Curie Global Fellowship (MSCA PF)
We are looking for a candidate to develop a proposal on:
Nitrogen cycling in arid and/or drought-affected ecosystems, with a focus on soil microbial processes (including fungi).
⚠️ New paper out in @journalofecology.bsky.social
Our study highlights the mechanisms associated with the stronger drought resistance of subordinate species in grasslands 🌱☀️

Thanks @mschiedung.bsky.social and Beatrice Giannetta for the invitation!
Looking forward to speaking at the EGU Soil System Science Campfire: Soils under change on March 25.
I’ll present “Living dry: microbial physiology under drought”, sharing insights from climate manipulation experiment on how soil microbes reorganize under drought.

Feeling very grateful for an incredible month in the lab at the University of Bologna.
We had the pleasure of hosting @petehomyak.bsky.social, organized inspiring Winter School lectures by @andreasrichter.bsky.social and Francesca Cotrufo, celebrated a newly accepted paper, and — most excitingly
Last days to join the winter school at The University of Bologna on Plant-soil microbe functionality under climate change (February 2026). I will present with @andreasrichter.bsky.social , Francesca Cotrufo and many others. Please join ( PhD students and early career)

Travel awards are available for early-career scientists!
We welcome contributions from researchers studying soil microbial processes at any scale — from molecules to ecosystems. Methodological developments, mechanistic insights, and integrative frameworks are particularly encouraged.
This session will explore how microbial activity, dormancy, and mortality shape soil carbon cycling — from methodological innovations to manipulative experiments, long-term monitoring, synthesis, and modeling approaches.

If you’re excited by: Soil microbial responses to climate extremes and Aerobic methane oxidation in terrestrial ecosystems we’d love to hear from you!
We're currently forming a proposal team and planning for this or next year calls.
We're open to applicants who: Already have a research idea they'd like to refine OR Are excited to co-develop a strong, original project concept together with us
The final proposal will be tailored to the fellow’s expertise and career goals, within our shared research interests.
We are initiating a collaboration focused on and how their activity and community dynamics shift under repeated drought and rewetting conditions. We already have well-established field sites in Italy and pure culture collections in Norway.
Postdoc Opportunity – Methanotrophs and Drought Resilience
Are you interested or working on microbial ecology and methane ?
We’re looking for a motivated postdoc or final-year PhD interested in submitting a Marie Skłodowska-Curie or HFSP proposal with us (in Italy and/or Norway).
