Problem he’s got now is that Robbins has said that vetting issues didn’t related to Epstein. So he’s sacked Mandelson for something not linked to the vetting issue, and the story will rumble on and on and on.

It is, but he started his role 3 days before the vetting recommendation was made? Also it’s a unique position I think. In most jobs your appointment isn’t announced by Downing Street and doesn’t make front page news. Given his history as well? Think it points towards the vetting process being seen…

Given that the decision to approve/deny is very much one for the appointing department (they are given a recommendation but the decision is theirs) then you’re really sending out a very strong message by announcing in public.
The whole thing is a shitshow tbh.
Personally think that announcing appointments prior to conclusion of a vetting procedure is a pretty prejudicial act. Especially as vetting outcomes are supposed to remain very much known only to the vetting agency, a tiny number of people in the appointing department, and the person being vetted.
