It's that time of the year where my schedule is like a game of Jenga
depressing to see university leadership realize the professors they mistreat on a daily basis fucking hate them and instead of getting the hint and just going back to working for lockheed and IBM they're just mistreating them more
And that's part of this gets charged - one person's high priority-for-them request is merely one of several mid-priority tasks for me (something I don't always know until I've glanced at my inbox, looked at my to-do list, etc, so sometimes I overprioritize a small task and neglect a big one!)
I like this way of putting it, thanks Rebecca. I've had about half of this thought previously in less clear fashion, namely that part of why email is a matter of various frictions in our sorts of work is that email involves multiple tasks and a nontrivial subset of those tasks involves prioritizing.
Personally I try to be honest and polite in a way that fits with how I'm feeling (if I feel bad for them and I feel like it's my fault I'm more like 'hey I'm sorry' and if I don't, I'm less so) so for me I wouldn't thank them unless I felt actually grateful.
Congrats! looks great! (literally - nice cover! - and metaphorically)
Cover for the new book is in
I mean really they ought to apologizing to us for emailing. the very idea!!
I just wanna be like 'sorry for the delay in my reply, I'm still drowning'
I promise I'm not trying to revive this discussion. Just wanted to highlight how this aligns with my "whose trust?" question. Nobody seems to care about the ways my trust in higher ed has been eroded.
around a lot with the device in an open-ended way. Otoh the idea that someone like me is going to instruct them meaningfully instruct them on anything like how to use it is totally bananas. I can only sort of manage to use my flip phone!
I've come round to a related position, which is that if there are beneficial use cases (and idk if there are, I doubt it, but maybe it can't be ruled out logically speaking?) then the people who will find them will be young people with good conventional-before-AI educations who also just sorta mess
AI has almost completely invalidated online instruction, which once held a ton of promise. It can still be saved, but only if faculty are willing to do a whole lot more work for no additional pay.

It's probly not actually that important but it drives me up the fucking wall how many people basically work in the military industrial complex or as boosters for it but/and are provided with ready to hand just-so stories and thought stopping cliches to avoid realizing it.
This cutesy bullshit frame will look sinister in retrospect once video comes out of these monstrosities slaughtering civilians but by then everyone involved in producing this will be happily retired and berating their grandkids that they need to be realistic and major in Applied Torture or whatever
a concert backdrop that says over 30 universities destroyed in iran against black and white picture of rubble
backdrop that says last standing university in gaza against a black and white image of al-israa university
giant three screen stage backdrop showing footage of the bombing of a university in gaza
The Strokes played Coachella against a backdrop listing all the world leaders that had been assassinated by the CIA, a count of the number of universities bombed in Iran, and footage of the bombing of the last university in Gaza
This is a wonderful book and everyone should read it.
Are you mad at me

OpenAI: We’re burning money like the Joker. A miracle needs to happen for us to turn a profit
Microsoft: Please please use our AI systems, we’re teetering on the edge here
Anthropic: I wonder what’ll kill us first: lawsuits, regulations or model collapse
Media and universities: AI is here to stay
I thought this was great and, once again, highly recommend @budgetmotelabyss.bsky.social's book!

Seems to me without some very serious intervention - magic wand, massive riots, wave of unionization - the most likely outcome of the current trajectory is just lots more people die and even more still suffer intense indignity and deprivation.
I saw them on one of their reunion shows in maybe 2006 or so, Dillinger Four played before them and during the D4 set between songs their bassist just kept hollering stuff like 'you guys you guys Naked FUCKING Raygun!!!' I found that very endearing.
19 year old documentary about Naked Raygun now on youtube, taking a lot of self control not to use all caps
