the cold war teachers and professors responsible for the program's original design excluded courses like this because they wanted their students to experience liberal education before professionalization or specialization

Sometimes you get the synthesis of gravitas (face) and godlike youth (body) in one statue
The US wants allies without being an ally, the UK wants soft power without cultural institutions
Worse than limited opening hours, it's the withdrawal of 2/3 of the archive for curiosity-driven research that is the real scandal for what is supposed to be a public-service organization.
Between this and the “JFK,Jr a WASP style icon” thing last month, there appears to be a great forgetting of 20th century common knowledge occurring at the Times.
what next? what, are we gonna provide *roads* for the wealthy too? gonna have health inspectors keep contaminants out of their groceries? are we just gonna have gutters and sewer systems around rich people's homes?
The vast majority of Americans are birthright citizens. Unless you naturalized or were born abroad to an American parent, you are a citizen because of the 14th Amendment. There is nothing constitutionally distinct about Americans born here to non-Americans. We are all literally equal citizens.
On 8 April, to celebrate the publication of the new Guardian Long Read magazine, I'll be talking to the extremely brilliant @samanthsubramanian.bsky.social, Sirin Kale and @samirashackle.bsky.social at the Owl Bookshop in Kentish Town. Tickets here! owlbookshop.co.uk/product/the-...
I don't know what SCOTUS will do on birthright citizenship case, it's anybody's guess. But if they endorse Trump's diktat, the only response is defiance. Outright, open defiance by the states. A decision not just erroneous but illegitimate, beyond their power, null and void from the day it's issued.
Becoming a confident French speaker as an adult with no particular linguistic facility is challenging (ask me how I know), but being able to correctly pronounce a short speech written for you by a native Francophone requires a modest investment of time. That’s all he had to do here, I think.
Never mind, it appears to be working now. :)
@rug.nl Hello! I am trying to apply for a job but it appears that the entire vacancies section of your website is down. The deadline for this job is today. Is there anyway to fix this?
Sometimes authors write characters who do not express that author’s experiences and opinions
Is this extremely predictable, extremely predicted outcome unplanned, though? Or have capital and its assistant, the state, been relentlessly shaving down the mediating layer between public funds and private profit, "education," for decades?
It’s infuriating, but also just so depressing. *No one* in charge of any part of our educational infrastructure seems to understand why it’s important for people to…read things that are difficult.
Here is my pride flag everybody! I hung one up yesterday in my office at Boston University, as they seek to enforce and defend a policy of removing them (along with other banners in public view, they say).
This is a small act of love for my corner of the world, in a dark time. This flag goes deep.
what will disappear under such a regime is 1) professors developing the labor-intensive, relationship-intensive knowledge of their students' thoughts and dispositions, and 2) the ability for fields to reconstitute themselves via the training of early-career scholars who do these "low-value tasks"
This is exactly what students will tell you, vehemently, that they don't want. Yet here we are.
I have a joke about a barometer but it doesn’t mean anything.

oh cool we’re doing the Wire Mother experiment again, but on all of society
I agree that Oxbridge should expand, but it doesn’t make sense to do it in this way (automatic admission) because the admissions interview is an important for assessing whether a student can actually benefit from the tutorial system.
This really epitomises the issues with so-called generative AI (LLMs) - the people who promote and code them really think like this. The fear of ambiguity, ambivalence and difficulty is, in and of itself, characteristic of fascism.

The absolute most disgusting, eliminationist Islamophobia from multiple members of the House Republican caucus continues to spew forth without acknowledgment or censure
‘Year after year, members of Las Abuelas de Plaza de Mayo have circled the square in central Buenos Aires, arm in arm, to demand the return of their forcibly disappeared grandchildren. They’re still marching.’

If you're at the airport and Kristi Noem is doing the ominous little message from the TSA screens, you no longer have to do anything she says. Leave your laptop in the case, whatever.
Screenshot of a 3hr old post from the GW Hatchet: “BREAKING: GW sold its Virginia campus to Amazon Data Services, an Amazon subsidiary that manages the company's data centers, for $427 million on Friday. The deed, obtained by The Hatchet, authorizes ADS to develop the campus into a data or information technology center. STORY TK”
GW‘s student newspaper appears to have broken the story that the institution has sold a satellite campus to Amazon to be turned into a data center, which is just about chef’s kiss for the state of American higher education rn
