I hate that we have to pass these bills but given that apparently we do, I’m glad we are.

AAUP-OSU Statement on the Selection of Provost Ravi Bellamkonda as Permanent OSU President

We are surprised and disappointed at the Board of Trustees’ decision to choose a new permanent university president without even consulting faculty, staff, and students. Ohio State’s system of shared governance - not to mention best practices in hiring university presidents - requires all of us having a say in the process. This hasty, undemocratic process starts this presidency on the wrong footing and sends the wrong message about our supposed shared values.

The speed and secretiveness of this selection follows a troubling pattern of institutional entitlement. The last few years at Ohio State under Ted Carter have been characterized by mass arrests, a chilling of free speech, allegations of covering up abuse, and now corruption. Why risk more public mistrust when OSU is already constantly in the news for the wrong reasons and there has been so much reputational harm? Now is the time to be more careful with decision-making and more accountable, not less.

In just the past two days, over 700 people–faculty, staff, students, alumni, as well as community members–signed our petition calling for a presidential search committee that reflects the democratic structure of the University Senate. That demand to be heard still stands. Going forward, we will continue to work to make sure that OSU faculty and others actually have a voice.

This rushed process has given us no time to consider or discuss the merits of Provost Bellamkonda’s elevation to the presidency, but we wish him well and hope for a successful presidency. If the new president wants to win the trust of the community, he should take immediate action to show that he represents a new era - repeal Ted Carter’s anti-free speech policies, listen to abuse survivors, and commit to greater transparency and authentic shared governance going forward.

And just like that, a new permanent OSU president!

Please read & circulate our statement.

We will continue to be active in creating space for the voices of faculty & the university community. We invite all faculty to join the chapter & all who want transparency & inclusion to work with us.

Multiple parents of Ypsilanti students detained by ICE, school says The arrests happened near school property, officials said.

This is some of the most vile shit I can imagine, picking up parents while they drop off their kids (who are US citizens) at school. #ICEOUT of Ypsilanti, Michigan and the rest of the US. 😔
PASS SB508, 509 and 510.

People are going to try and lure you into debates about whether Maduro was a good guy or not and the thing is, it doesn’t matter for the purposes of discussing whether violent kidnappings and extrajudicial murders by the US government are ok. No, they aren’t! End of convo.

What the USA has done is absolutely disgraceful. Time for a boycot of US products, especially tech, and for the population in the USA to instigate a change in leadership in their own country.

The Long Poisoning When Regulatory Delay becomes State-Sanctioned Suffering

Two great questions about deaths due to preventable environmental contamination: When is a death a murder? And: When do repeated, preventable harms become corporate crimes?

The "smartphones/social media" discourse suffers from some amazing historical amnesia. There was no 2008 financial crisis and no global pandemic starting in 2020, it's all SCREENS SCREENS SCREENS. Major world events? Just the backdrop against which SCREENS happened.

the internet has decided that em-dashes are a hallmark of llm writing, which is *extremely* annoying to me, as someone who uses em-dashes all the time.

dear internet please consider the possibility that LLMs use em-dashes a lot because they're, like, good

Panera’s moderately caffeinated lemonade was loosely associated with 2 deaths before it was taken off market.

This article alone has 4 examples of ChatGPT encouraging young people to commit suicide, and OpenAI’s own public stats estimate over a million users discuss suicide with ChatGPT each week.

I’ve also found that since AI has a tendency to agree with you, instead of saying ā€œis this code right?ā€ you can say ā€œwhat is wrong with this codeā€ (even with the code it generates), and it’s much less likely to just say it’s correct to have a positive tone with you.

"The Defense Department...announced last week it would cease sharing the imagery with NOAA and NASA."

This sort of data siloing, often b/c military organizations don't want to share their toys w/ civilian agencies, is a hallmark of authoritarian states. It's also impeding global wildfire response.

I started a new thing at Carleton College! It highlights the breadth of a liberal arts education, reminds students that faculty don't know EVERYTHING, and is loads of fun!

In "Guess Lectures," faculty give 7-minute talks using someone else’s slides from an unrelated discipline, sight unseen.
