If you are a data, SQL and NBA nerd then this is the preview video for you. I recently analyzed the 2018 NBA Draft by vibe-coding with Windsurf and testing the agentic IDE's SQL capabilities.

I had fun editing these snippets from the second entry in my Advanced Tableau Dashboard Build series.

In the full length sequel (for members of my channel), I tackle the meticulous container approach it takes to complete the dashboard build we started in part 1.

I've worked in organizations that have needed more SQL processes than Excel spreadsheets.

But I've never worked at an organization where they've needed more Excel spreadsheets than SQL processes.

When to use SQL:
✔ Handling Large Datasets
✔ Automating Processes
✔ Ensuring Data Security

I attended SQL Saturday Atlanta and got to observe my talented Protiviti teammates Jeff Levy and Vernon Gomes in action. They gave an informative presentation on the pros and cons of using a #Microsoft Fabric Lakehouse vs. using a Fabric Warehouse.

Create Dynamic Excel Drop Down Lists - The Easy Way
Create Dynamic Excel Drop Down Lists - The Easy Way YouTube video by Anthony Smoak

This #Excel dynamic dropdown technique requires minimal preparation and only uses 3 functions.

In this tutorial, I'll use 1 dropdown list to select a position and the other dropdown list will dynamically populate with members of the NBA 75th Anniversary Team who were selected at that position.

Godspeed President Carter.

He was easily the most moral, selfless and decent president in history.

I was extremely fortunate to meet him when I was a graduate student at Georgia Tech years ago.

For me, writing the SQL is enjoyable and is about 10% of total effort. It's all of the other factors in play to understand and access the right data that complicate the coding.

Writing SQL is rarely just about writing the syntax.
Anyone can write a query that returns data.
But writing effective SQL that returns the correct data?

That can be a real challenge.

Hot Take: SQL is Difficult In this blog post I am here to defend the art of working with SQL and its talented practitioners.   Here is my hot take, it can be very difficult to write SQL.   Conventional data punditr…

Conventional data punditry suggests that #SQL isn’t difficult to learn. Of course it’s easy to write SQL that returns data; however, it can be very difficult to write SQL that returns the CORRECT #data.

With that said there have been plenty of times where I put together exploratory analytics to determine if there was anything worth knowing about the data. However, the analytics where someone can look at my results and immediately make decisions to help the business are the most rewarding to me.

Great question. One recent example was a dashboard where I put together a proof of concept sourced from ERP extracts. It enabled the CFO to know exactly which employees were frequently the bottleneck in the invoice payment process so he could address them directly and pay outstanding invoices.
