Today the ALA released its 2025 most challenged books list. Across genres and ages, one trend persists: these bans target marginalized voices. Reading about others teaches empathy & promotes understanding; it's time to ask ourselves why that idea is so threatening to those who want to ban books.

It's normal in libraries to see a small number of book challenges by parents & patrons who have concerns about content. Today, however, 92% come from organized groups, including officials and dark money groups like Citizens for a New LA. It's time we reclaim our libraries for the people they serve.

On this Right to Read Day 2026, Louisiana Citizens Against Censorship stands with our libraries, stands for the rights of families to make their own choices, stands against book bans, and stands for the freedom to read freely.
And yes, we will always stand in the way.

Not librarians. Not drag queens.

#Bookbanning and #censorship are politically motivated attacks on marginalized communities. It was never about protecting children. #saveourlibraries #notadragqueen #Louisiana

An informed electorate is EVERYTHING in a functioning #democracy. Banned Books Week is a great time to pay special attention to the ways in which #censorship is growing in #America. It's not just #libraries anymore.

One researcher's brave stand in the urgent defense of academic freedom • Louisiana Illuminator Academic institutions exist to challenge the status quo, not protect it. Tulane has the opportunity to reaffirm that mission. It must not squander it.

One day there will be an accounting. For all of this.

"When universities permit political or financial interests to muzzle scholars, they betray their core mission: the free pursuit of knowledge. Academic freedom is not a luxury — it is the very bedrock of institutional integrity."

🚨FINDINGS FROM MY REPORTING🚨

CFNL is like a lot of Christian Nationalist groups, in that they seem homegrown, but really, they aren't.

The founders of this group are connected.

One prominent connection is Louisiana US House Rep Clay Higgins.

He wants publicly funded church libraries. 🧵

Gambit's 2025 40 Under 40 nominations are now open! Gambit recognizes the do-gooders and over-achievers of New Orleans in our annual 40 Under 40. But first we need nominations for our class of 2025.

Fuck it I'm shooting my shot:

If my journalism, tiktok video essays, festival and university panel talks, solo events, role as president/ board member of @thirdlanternlit.bsky.social etc. has impacted you in a positive way, maybe nominate me for NOLA 40 under 40.🤷‍♂️

🚨 NEW INVESTIGATION 🚨

“Soft targets”

That’s how CFNL refers to institutions like library boards, because they are easy to takeover.

And that’s what they’ve tried to do, and they’ve tried to do it quietly.

So I’ve spent the last year investigating them.

Even if you **think** you know what's behind the attacks on #libraries in #Louisiana, read this report.

It's all here - the connections, the influence peddling, the bullying of #librarians - with receipts.

This wasn't genuine concern about book content; it was a coordinated, professional campaign.

Last month I spoke with the Southern Poverty Law Center about book bans across our state & their direct impact on my community. Democracy begins with the freedom of expression; if you want to protect the Constitution, start there. These attacks are not random.

A killing machine fueled by racism Gov. Jeff Landry wants to start executing death row inmates again

Louisiana will likely torture & kill Jessie Hoffman today. That he had an all-white jury deserves far more attention. The death penalty here is fueled by racism. No white person has been executed in Louisiana for a crime against a Black victim since 1752. robertmann.substack.com/p/a-killing-...
