And Nova? She has met every hard moment with so much resilience, bravery, verve, and good humor. While Jasmin and I have been trading shifts and subsisting on hospital-grade sleep, our girl has been resting like a champion and feeling better each day.
You learn to read your child’s body the way you learn a language: slowly, through years of daily connection, until her signals become fluent. You advocate fiercely for the one who cannot always speak up for herself, knowing that your presence at her bedside is its own form of love.
They have listened, observed, and worked hard to understand what Nova couldn’t always tell them herself — because parenting a child with Down syndrome through a medical crisis means becoming a translator.
They have been. Even within this fractured landscape, the nurses and doctors in Mission’s children’s wing have shown up with an attentiveness and care that reminds you why people go into medicine in the first place.
