Three Pages of Don Quixote Here was a woman who had lived through a dictatorship, been through three marriages, and built a brilliant career in a relentlessly male-dominated field. And she was happy.

A year ago, my friend Alexandra Bellow died: a Romanian mathematician, former wife of Saul Bellow, and an extraordinary woman who was in love with Don Quixote until her very last day. I wrote this small tribute in the days just after her death.

I’ve always disliked large conferences bc they’re overwhelming. But I go for a number of reasons including my favorite: moments like this one where I found myself w a beloved colleague poring over the Medieval Academy Fellows’ book & squealing w delight as we got to the page w Panofsky’s signature.

A vitrine with a 15th-century missal open in it. On the wall above is a large infographic showing another opening from the book, which in honor of the patron and scribe we have named the Vernon-Lombard Missal.

In honor of the Medieval Academy of America's conference here, UMass's Special Collections & University Archives has mounted an exhibition, co-curated by Abby Klug & Genny Dorgan (I helped a little), and featuring some of the wonderful work done by students in my manuscripts seminar last year!

I'm very grateful to Emily C. Francomano, Sol Miguel-Prendes, and @albertlloret.bsky.social for their thoughtful responses to _Alone Together_ in the latest issue of La corónica. It's hard to express the feeling of being read with such sensitivity and critical acumen. I learned a lot about my book!

It was a long-simmering and deepening dismay with what this post describes that motivated me and @cnygren.bsky.social to propose this as one of our four frictions. www.publicbooks.org/four-frictio...

I see that it just appeared in Spanish. But the English version is very much true to their podcast: 21st-Century Baroque prose full of sassy pop twists.

"In this essay I will"
- spoilers
- over-confident
- rigid, boring

"In this essay I *might*"
- creates suspense
- nonchalant
- adventurous, fun
