Our June meet-up is in 10 days! We'll also be getting a presentation this month from @kaesve.bsky.social titled "Pun Driven Development: A Side Project Philosophy"! This one will be a bit more developer friendly, though still for everyone. Come through and catch up!

A friend of mine (@kaesve.bsky.social) is building an offline read.cv profile editor for the people who backed them up and want to continue being able to edit them. If you're into that can you like/reply on this to do a quick interest check? (DMs also open if you want to share your backup for tests)
nice
What are you building this in? Are you writing the particle sim yourself? Im also craving more technical gamedev content!
Someone needs to make a game like this for the playdate!
I don’t know godot at all and it kinda depends on your game, but I really like the fully procedural shader-based windows technique, which solves this problem pretty easily for skyscrapers and such. Can’t find a good reference right now, but happy to explain more if you think it might fit
Is there a shadertoy version?
Are there other zig users on here? Are you interested in it? It’s been a really enjoyable experience so far. It has that C feel, but with a more modern and nicer dev experience. Feels like a perfect fit for the playdate
Art for infiniplumber for the playdate. Black and white pixel art of pipes slowly filling up with water
Taking a break from Chester at the Park to work on smaller projects and new tech
Do you remember that pipe-connecting game? Ever wish that game was also Tetris? Infiniplumber is a game about laying pipe 💦
Building in Zig for #playdate, coming soon™️

My current project is a puzzle game, and the prototype is fully js, no libraries. I’m porting it to c or zig at some point to run it on the playdate, but plain js is my cozy place
chesteratthepark.com
I don’t think it’s cheating, but tbh, I rarely click on videos—opening a whole new app is too much effort when I am just scrolling
I’m making chesteratthepark.com , a 1bit pixel art puzzle game where you reunite Chester with his owner using the rules of chess! I’ve been working on it for a year and a half, and am getting close to finishing the prototype with the first 10 puzzles. Everything coded from scratch, art is also mine
What about the opposite trap where you spent months on cool new tech, but you don’t actually have a game
Look! This sphere has really cool real time global illumination!
First, but with a space before the ( and {, and 2-space tabs. You should see how I write switches tho
A… game about finding your glasses?
Yeah, I know what they do, and roughly how they work. Marc ten Bosch, for a fleeting moment, made me feel like I got it—but that moment passed quickly lol.
I rarely do 3d, and when I do janky euler angles have been enough. If I do a real 3d project, I’ll tackle it
marctenbosch.com/quaternions/
As someone who reads math text books for fun—I still don’t understand quaternions!
Quaternions seem awesome specifically for 3d rotation, and if I’d need to, I could figure out how to use them. But there’s a lot more math that I use almost every day. Basic linear algebra and trig especially
Chester peeking through the gate of the Japanese garden
Chester sitting in front of the gate. A bunny is hiding halfway behind the gate
It’s been a while since I’ve posted, but I’m still working on chesteratthepark.com!
Today I finished a completely new renderer that works with #1bit sprites directly and supports depth maps. Chester can now go behind the gate and other background features!

Its still possible to do simple webdev, and some of us consider it a virtue. Especially while you’re still learning. If I were to start over today, Id want to start without react and vercel, etc.
Is there any specific thing you ran into recently?
Probably the 5th or 6th one, when you are way past budget and time frame and you somehow have to bring it home:p
Whats wrong with just GitHub? Free hosting for a html file and a platform dedicated to managing multiple people working on the same code
What’s excessive?
Im sure you can fit a car into any theme. If not, make a game about how badly a car fits in the most stereotypical game for that theme 🤡
Me too, because I’m terrible with color!
Black and white pixel art of an owl about to land on a bench
I’d post a gif for #screenshotsaturday if I could 😔 You’ll have to make due with a single frame of Orion’s fly-in animation for now

A side by side comparison of hl1 and akira. They’re basically the same picture
The akira image immediately invoked memories of half life, seems like im not the only one

I’m planning to use the c sdk, because I want to try to add some visual effects that will be very performance sensitive. Right now I’m still prototyping in js though, not on the playdate yet.
That’s my point, it’s pixel art, it’s authentic and it’s not designed for crts.
Dithering is not that different from cross hatching or halftone like used in manga. Every medium has limitations that inspire techniques, but it’s not like pixel art can only be authentic when all those limitations are applied. It’s silly to say that gameboy doesn’t have authentic pixel art
