Meet kungaka – ‘the hidden one’. This ancient lizard could be the rarest reptile in Australia The kungaka represents an ancient lineage from when Australia was wetter. Today, it survives in a sheltered desert gorge.

Every Australian should be able to identify a native Antechinus from a pest mouse.

I've made this so it's really easy for any age to learn to tell them apart.
Snap & percussion mouse traps kill them both. If you find an A. has been killed change to live catch mouse traps.

Photo by Wendy Miller of a Golden Eagle followed closely by a Common Raven with a photo of Shaquille O'Neal (by Bigmoe797) superimposed above the eagle. Text on the graphic says: This Common Raven heckling a Golden Eagle set up a helpful size comparison. We added Shaquille O'Neal which seemed appropriate because "aquille" comes from the Latin "aquila" meaning eagle. With a wingspan of up to 7 feet, Aquila chrysaetos (the eagle) is roughly 1 Shaquille, while Corvus corax (the raven) is about half a Shaquille. Golden Eagles are sometimes said to resemble a flying ironing board, but those are only about 4.5 feet long, and it's more fun to imagine a soaring Shaq.

Bar graph comparing emissions from Grok's fossil-fuelled data centres to avoided emissions from Tesla's products for the years 2023 and 2024.

Comparison of emissions from manufacturing xAI's chatbot responses (5,127,553 tonnes CO2e) versus all Tesla products (1,056,000 tonnes CO2e) with respective analyses.

Comparison of emissions from manufacturing xAI's chatbot responses (5,127,553 tonnes CO2e) versus all Tesla products (1,056,000 tonnes CO2e) with respective analyses.

*New short blog* - finally (with help) got around to getting a total estimate of Grok's climate pollution 🫠

- Once all fossil gas online, = to between half and all of Tesla's ANNUAL GLOBAL avoided emissions

- Currently, 5x the emissions of Tesla's total manufacturing

I have heard comments from other scientists calling taxonomy 'stamp collecting' more times than I would like to count. In Australia, the budget for taxonomy of all species in Australia is $2m per year. For everything.

$300 tests spark call for ban of controversial product sold at Bunnings, Coles, Woolworths and Mitre 10 With the government unlikely to outlaw the dangerous product, the retailers have been urged to act.

Initially, many of the owl deaths had appeared accidental, as they had been struck by cars.

But after conducting a series of $300 tests, it became clear a common product sold in supermarkets was to blame.

To a first approximation, all Australian vertebrates are lizards. 🦎
But not just any lizards, Sphenomorphine skinks!

With more than 280 species they are hyper variable. Now, Janne Torkkola has pulled together the biggest phylogeny of the group to date. Read for free:
