A screenshot of the spaceflight simulation game Kitten Space Agency in its map view. There are various complicated-looking gauges, buttons and windows around the edges. The focused window is titled "OemLoader 0.0.1-alpha+ffb34e0a6ece9d252a475c2fa9". In the middle of the screen, there is a zoomed out view of the Earth and the Moon. Near the Earth, there is a marking that says "Rocket", with the rocket's future trajectory (taking it around the moon) visible as a green line.

Icarus Is The Perfect Survival Sim No One's Talking About Dean 'Rocket' Hall's Icarus is my platonic ideal of a survival sim

I arrived four years late to @deanhall.bsky.social's Icarus, and I'm so glad I found it. This is my perfect survival sim.

We added a native Linux deployment for Kitten Space Agency, which is free. Linux users have responded with thousands of dollars of contributions, including one of USD 1000. I think this will be the new way to make games like this. Unheard of lifetime customer values for us.

I mean you can think anything you want for sure. But if you think 75 million is “mid” for a budget you are not living in reality. It would be like trying to argue in a made up language.

Australia should have been “australasia” (they’re in my country, NZ) but autocorrect ate it

The budget of arc raiders was 75 million (confirmed as “no far off” by the CEO). Not trying to be rude, but I am not sure any of your data is even remotely tied with reality.

The products you listed are big, big spenders. GGG who makes Path of Exile are one of the largest studios in Australia in spend, and are wholly owned by the largest video game company in the world, Tencent. ARC raiders is backed by Nexon, one of the largest game companies in the world.

I the prospect of success is no better from micro to mid. So we will see more people aim for hits as a micro studio. And funding to scale will be poor for micro aiming to mid. Those that do will suffer high attrition as past success no longer counts for much. Monaco v Monaco 2 is a good example

Most of what you listed have listed are some of the most successful games ever made. The others are the most successful games of their years. Middle is the games in the middle of revenue. Starting approx USD10M up to about USD100M. Beyond that you will be the top grossing titles.(top tier)

The death of the middle of the market in PC gaming has now spread to the highest tier of success. The situation is now irreversible. We will see consolidation of the middle with only small islands of success. This is new territory for video games, where the mid-market was the nursery for AAA success

User on r/kittenspaceagency posted this comparison of the actual Apollo Landing site matched in Kitten Space Agency. Wider shot is ingame, inset is the apollo photo. Best thing, you can try the pre-alpha now for free, ksa.ahwoo.com (credit: u/u/Longjumping-Box-8145)

Over the steam winter sale, ICARUS sold just under a million new base game units during the sale (984k). We also did quarter of a million DLC units (243k).

fun times. Reminds me of when I reported one that called me a “FA**OT” (it was not censored). That’s all the review said. Steam wouldn’t remove it. They also didn’t remove a review that said they wished I had died on Mount Everest, when I complained I was told they didn’t threaten me “directly”

We just pushed new version of Kitten Space Agency (its free) running on .net 10. I believe first game in the world to do so. Only possible because of BRUTAL. You're only as indie as the tools you use. Unreal + Unity and their licensing & tech are a blight on the industry ksa.ahwoo.com

New from me! Talked to @deanhall.bsky.social about Brutal, coding with LLM assistance, and why open source frameworks could be the future of game dev.

Maybe the best chat I've had about what genAI can do for game development (caveat: my other worries about the technology still stand).

Vulkan is really the “Karen” of programming. It’s like “You said you were going to do this in subpass 0 but you did it in subpass 1. I’ve rendered the frame but I’m going to crash out and I want to speak to the manager.”
