With Chime and Serpent’s Path ‘98 playing in theaters, I had a brief but very cool chat with the great Kiyoshi Kurosawa

I crush the quadrant, the thunder turns the needles, and now the mad sea parts the log-line.

GHOST EYES (1974) Kuei Chih-Hung
A vampire ghost optometrist with a smoke allergy controls a beautician through demonic contact lenses in this early Chih-Hung Shaw horror that prophetically manifests as a Haunted Tale tinged in Italian gothic mood over logic sensibility.

Anno playing with his toys has been for the betterment of human culture for 40 years. Let my man play!
Seconded, these are great. Probably the peak of “mainstream Tsukamoto” but still crawling with weirdness.
Insane visual overstimulus from Speed Racer (2008)

A man in black on the rudder of a massive ship under water
A man in the mirror’s face opened into a void of fleshy smoke Nightmare Detective (2006) / Nightmare Detective 2 (2008), Shinya Tsukamoto
This duo is essential. Both movies, one of the most uncompromising and worthwhile creative dives into suicidal intent and depressive self-harm ever filmed. Overwhelming with fucking amazing ghosts, monsters, and endlessly unpredictable mindscape hallucinations.
Queria viver na realidade em que em 2008 Speed Racer foi um grande hit e ditou o visual dos anos 2010–2020s com muitas cores e não O Cavaleiro das Trevas 🙏

without speed racer i would never have started making art (again). this movie whipped me out of a decade long artistic rut/depression. i literally danced the first time i saw it. i knew from the very opening frames that i was in for something special. one of my all time faves
Speed Racer (2008)
The Wachowskis’ 2008 cult classic Speed Racer is coming to 4K Blu-ray and digital in May.

Jinmen in Devilman Crybaby (2018)
Manga Jinmen: eats Akira’s little girl neighbor and forces him to kill her
OVA Jinmen: kills Akira’s dad, eats Akira’s mom, and forces him to kill her
Crybaby Jinmen: IS literally Akira’s dad, eats Akira’s mom AND the little girl, and forces him to kill all three
A fanart of Jinmen from devilman in a black background. Jinmen is a turtle demon that has living people on it's carapace to protect itself and manipulate his opponents while fighting. I made him purple with a pink carapace and blue skulls on it, so it's more stylized
Found an old devilman fanart that I still like, so Imma post it here

That can't be a coincidence. #CSM202
REALLY good Columbo episode.
Charisma (1999) Kiyoshi Kurosawa
Barren Illusion (1999), Kiyoshi Kurosawa

“This machine hasn’t worked since 2000.”
“Oh.”
“How come someone doesn’t do something?”
“…”’
“Why won’t someone fix it?”
“…”
“How come someone doesn’t do something?”
Slipped into his golden run of Cure to Bright Future, Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s Barren Illusion (1999), a crunchy prototype of Pulse made completely with a crew of his own film students, might surprisingly be the quiet pinnacle of his Dawn of the 21st Century doomerist malaise. INCREDIBLE despair.

Someone’s bare feet propped up on a shelf of Knick knacks
An abandoned music set up of a record player and sound board
A young man sitting in the window of his apartment, fading into transparency in the sunlight Barren Illusion (1999), Kiyoshi Kurosawa
Resonates so truthfully, sickeningly, and frighteningly with a 2020s perspective. The world has ended, ended years ago, and what’s left is a radioactive day-to-day where what makes life worth living are just brief distractions before you slip into the surrender of vanishing in thing air.
An empty tape box on a sound system table
A woman looking at a mail package she’s stolen
A woman turning off a small television propped on her bed
A young at his sound system Barren Illusion (1999), Kiyoshi Kurosawa
Would have hit like a sniper’s shot if I had seen this one even three years ago. Now it just aches, dull and sore. The fading in and out, suicidal intent as a physical dissociation, hobbies and art as loose tethers before the quiet moments of too much thought and too much futureless fatigue… fuck.

The black mold atomic shadows in Pulse Pulse (2001), Kiyoshi Kurosawa
A black mold atomic shadow of a former person Pulse (2001), Kiyoshi Kurosawa
A young man fading Barren Illusion (1999), Kiyoshi Kurosawa
Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s recurrence of passive suicide. Disassociating out of life, fading into malaise or thin-air apathy. Giving up without actually hurting yourself. Self-harm as simply slipping into intangibility.
Ugh, the original Serpent’s Path is sooooooooooo fucking good. Absolutely one of my favorites of his.
Tony’s dream sequences are all nuts but the fact this is just about as scary as anything Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s done is soooooo
