@kevinoconnornba.bsky.social is absolutely correct on his latest podcast. Top seeds should get to pick the opponents for first round of NBA playoffs. One small change that would make a huge difference in raising the stakes of regular season games.

Best solution I’ve heard yet for NBA All-Star fix came from Nate Silver…

Absolutely insane story in New Orleans, where senior Saints and Pelicans officials (under the aegis of franchise owner Gayle Benson) appear to have been involved in covering up and minimizing child sexual abuse by Catholic Church clergy

How to make up the lost $$?
Knockout rounds of NBA Cup won’t count (a la Cup Finals).
Add a 2nd cup, single-elimination, w/ inter-league play (Euro, NBL, G-League…).
Play-in round could expand w/ all-inclusive knockout play for the 10 seed (*nod to B.S.).
That’s 3 more spots for extra games.
NBA season should be reduced to playing every team twice, once home and once away.
NBA post-expansion, regular season should be reduced to playing every team twice, once home and once away, with NBA Cup knockout play not counting on the schedule (xtra games). Add another in-season tourney, with at least some games not part of regular season (xtra games). And we’re almost there.

Post-expansion NBA Cup rules will need tweaks. I suggest: abandon all conferences and divisions. Replace with 4-team pods based on geography. Each year your 4-team pod gets paired with a different 4-team pod to create a division. 4 division winners, plus 4 wildcards.
