“Now when I encounter new writing from a name I don’t know, I have to remind myself to be cautious, just in case someone is trying to trick me. The book industry should do absolutely everything necessary to prevent readers from feeling the need to come to any new book from a place of skepticism.”

I am not a poet, but I am very tempted by this poetry workshop from the fine people at The Writer's Studio @twssfu.bsky.social: " Getting Out of Your Own Way with Tara Bentall King."

this wikipedia editor is orbiting the moon right now!
And this right here is the beauty of the writing process. (When you call it revising it doesn't sound half so exciting.)
I quite like the answer I gave to
@consumedbyink.bsky.social's question about writing advice in consumedbyink.ca/2021/02/17/q...
Haven't read this yet, but I'm reminded of Girlfriend on Mars by Deborah Willis -- a book I absolutely loved. And I don't think many folks will think about going to Mars in the same way after reading it.
"Maybe writing can't be taught, but editing can be taught—prayer, fasting and self-mutilation." —Donald Barthelme
... But after being a very heavy reader as a kid, and then a high school dropout, and living through times when I didn't know anyone who even READ books, it's still such a stunning thing for me to realise that these are people I know. The thrill has not gone away.
I was out book shopping with a young relative yesterday and kept finding books by my friends on my shelves -- which overjoyed me every time, and I kept pulling them out and talking about them. I don't think the young person could understand why I was so excited....

Do you need something beautiful, small, and slow in your life, that will get your thoughts and feelings flowing around in unexpected directions? I think you do -- and I recommend this stunning little jewel of a chapbook.
I was just scrolling through posts about books people thought were overrated and couldn't finish and saw folks complaining about some of my most beloved books and authors. There's a lesson here somewhere....

One of the many enjoyable things about this post: the word "pother." (Frankly I think this word is due for a comeback.)
But seriously, who has these "buckets of savings"?
I enjoyed the wakeup song today too. (Or maybe "enjoyed" is the wrong word -- it's more that it feels awfully resonant at the moment.)
What? That’s wild!
because I keep forgetting to mention it: LITERALLY ANYONE can nominate books for this prize! yes! that means you! you have until march 31st!
The Federal Book Ban bill uses funding threats to pressure schools to remove books.
Federal control over local policy - and federal control of reading, writing, and publishing - is unacceptable.

idk i think in a time when it feels like nothing matters & all is futile it might actually be time to double down and write your stories & make your paintings & sing your songs & do your art. create the things that make us human and share them.
We have more power than they want us to believe. Be careful around anyone who wants you to give up hope.
I’m curious: fellow writers, if you see that an old enemy or nemesis is going to be part of an event that (otherwise) sounds good, do you go, or stay away?
(Not that you or I have an enemy or nemesis, of course. Just a theoretical question, obviously.)
Thank you! Ha ha -- let's face it, some of them are unfinished for a reason :)
I’m a little afraid to do this!
Tapping the sign… ❤️
In other news, I went to a reading the other night and someone asked me if I'd ever heard of Submittable.
Now trying to figure out if I give off *that* much of a Luddite vibe, or am just that old.
(Yes, I do remember sending manuscripts in the actual mail. So maybe I'm overthinking here.)
