I go by eye and feel pretty much!
I take inspiration from Golden Age comics and Moebius for the look, based on that idea of style of coloring I just pick colors with the "feel" of the panel in mind.

I'm not great at explaining my way of thinking so I hope that helps convey it a bit, lol

Rat then dives for his lute. Suddenly, a bolt smashes through the window. It strikes the King of Thieves from behind, killing him.
