There is no "other half," and that "first half" (which is the only audience to begin with) isn't impressed by the milquetoast cowardice of appeasing those who hated the art in the first place. When you chase that "other half," all you do is telegraph to your audience that they aren't enough for you.
The audience that are alienated by your art being political aren't magically interested in the work if you cut out the politics. They already hated it because of the politics of the creators themselves. They aren't going to be won over. But the people who wanted the politics have nothing now.
By kowtowing to reactionary bullshit, THEY alienated the audience that wanted to see story lines like that. Meanwhile, I have never seen any conservatives talk about how much they loved the show or anything. The conservatives they tried to appease didn't actually care about the show either way.
I keep thinking back to that Pixar Disney+ show that was supposed to include a trans character/storyline, and conservatives complained, and the story was cut. Because they sacrificed their artistic integrity and removed something unique, I didn't bother with watching the show at all.
After a long time of struggling with writer's block, exhaustion, and stress, I'm finally making good progress on Bottle Out, and it feels so good to be back at it.

I've been guilty of that myself. When systems make you feel powerless, and you can't attack the systems in any meaningful way, and the people pushing those systems are immune to guilt or shame, the only people you can lash out at for some semblance of control, are the people we should be fostering.
"He should have known better" is a really easy way to dismiss someone figuring out for the first time that they'd been being lied to for who knows how long. It's easy to lash out at people who change too late because we know they'll actually feel remorse, unlike those who haven't changed yet.
