Video games are interactive and experiential. Having *life experiences* is also a big deal.
Screenshot of "Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream" showing the logo, and saying "Welcome to... Fruit Love Island" with a Mii that suspiciously looks like a strawberry.
Who needs AI?
Oh daamn, I want to play around with this.
The e-ink display they used is about $10 per card, which is prohibitively expensive if I was designing a commercial product. But this is the kind of design problem I love to gnaw on.
Especially making something that can't be replicated with just phones.
what then!!
We didn't deserve this day.
Make it as overwrought as possible. The silliness is the point.
You are practicing the mental act of connecting wildly disparate things together. At some point, it will become something you can do better on command.
Mike Rugnetta is disappointed by climbing Mount Everest. Hike Regretta.
Step 2. Make the worst nonsense puns you can think of. Bike Rugnetta. Mike Forgetta. Psych Rugnetta.
Step 3. Make one liners to set up the puns without using the pun word.
"Mike Rugnetta becomes a motorcycle racing youtuber, Bike Rugnetta."
"Mike Rugnetta is struck with amnesia, Mike Forgetta"
To not just be mean, if you have trouble ideating/brainstorming, it is a skill you can get better at. Take an improv class. Spend five minutes a day making up terrible puns.
No, seriously, I even have an exercise. Step 1. Pick a phrase, or a name. like Mike Rugnetta (miss u pbs idea channel)
Skeleton squatting meme with the text "MY BODY IS A MACHINE THAT TURNS SUGARS AND CARBOHYDRATES INTO BAD IDEAS"
Reading online about someone who uses AI to generate bad ideas so they can work from there to solve their game design problems and I'm like... buddy. I don't need a machine that turns energy into bad ideas. I'm a human:
I regret to inform you that I am now ✨Professionally On TikTok✨. I don't know what I'm doing, so if you also use tiktok, come say hi and watch me compete against Fruit Love Island. After all, I was born on an Island, I have a Love for games and I am a Fruit. Help me.

A grey and white cat inside of a big, rigid, dark yellow bag. Imagine a tote bag made of plastic but very tall. It's specifically to hold clean plastic trash. He's peeking out of the bag, his mouth obscured by the bag. You can see his butt and tail.
This idiot has decided to be Recyclable Trash.
It's Trans Day of Visibility today. If you're trans and are raising money for something (I don't care what it is), reply to this thread and I will boost you.
If you are a cis person, take a look and find someone to support if you can.
Everyone give this a share after.
Hi! Look at our little game please 💖
Game workers do not receive any residuals/royalties on shipped titles and shipping bonuses are increasingly rare. There's also no guarantee that your name will even be in the credits if you leave before ship, and studios will use this to keep you compliant.
All of this can and should change.
Let me send you something~ 🤫
Time to yell about the upcoming CROWNBREAKERS CROWDFUNDER! Help me make the game better!

I'm making a game where the core concept is managing true odds and boy do I go out of the way to simplify everything in the core and make everything incredibly transparent so that our little meat brains can actually fathom what these odds mean.
Can't wait for folks to be mad at it.
Thanks for sharing the article. I stopped designing games for that age bracket many years ago but damn, they're such a fascinating audience and I loved poring through academic research to back up my design decisions.
The magic circle is more fuzzy with a doll. The child is the one in control of where the dollhouse ends and can co-opt household objects to create new play. The world is also responding to the play in more unexpected ways than an app can (e.g. a doll falling when stood up).
I think the real issue that a standard dollhouse app has vs a literal dollhouse is due to the physical play space being so constrained within the tablet that you can only express yourself in the constraints of the tablet. There's no use verbalising because it's not responding to you doing so.
When I was designing Dr. Panda Plus Home Designer, an AR dollhouse app, I paid a lot of attention to the ergonomics of the app. I didn't want a child to hold the tablet to get the magic of AR. You really had to for the competitor apps and it added so much more friction to the act of play.
Anecdotally, I find that the way that kids aged 3-8 are able to handle a tablet (two handed, can't be held for long periods due to weight and ergonomics) compared to a doll (one handed, can be light enough to hold all day) just means that a child is able to express themselves better via a doll.
see?
here's the thing. A lot of people are like, the earth is fucked, it's beyond salvation, it's hit the tipping point, but time and time again we see that if we just fucking fixed the problem, it rebounds so incredibly fast. Imagine what could be done if people actually cared

Do you want it as salty? Indonesian soy sauce or Kecap Manis is probably the viscosity you want, but it's sweeter.
A meme from kids TV show Arthur, where the original is DW is staring a "keep out" sign on the door and says "this sign can't stop me because I don't know how to read." It's been edited to note that DW is Professor Tangrowth, the sign says "Explicit notes left by humans about what happened and why they're all gone" and DW/Professor Tangrowth says "I wonder where the humans are. Too bad idk how to read."
Pokopia sidesteps it perfectly! It establishes that none of the Pokemon can read.
All of these messages that you the player collected, they can't understand any of it. You know what happened but ditto and everyone else never will.
So, the lesson is... make all your characters illiterate, I guess?
As you play, you find lore drops that clarify what actually happened and why all the humans are gone. You know, little messages and letters, that kind of thing.
However, the campaign story and motivation never changes even though it really should. Tears of the Kingdom had a similar issue.
