I am losing my sight and can’t see this very well, but they are standing together indoors. Ethel Waters and Fredi Washington’s faces are close together.

One of the features included in that historic 1939 TV broadcast was a scene from the Broadway play Mamba’s Daughters by DuBose Heyward. Georgette Harvey, Ethel Waters, & Fredi Washington reprised their roles. Here they are at the Empire Theatre in a publicity shot for the play a few months earlier.

Yesterday was the 86th anniversary of singer and actress #EthelWaters’ variety TV special, “The Ethel Waters Show.” She was the first Black American to host a TV show! She was closeted by then, but she’d lived openly as a lesbian in Harlem before gaining wider fame. #PrideMonth 🏳️‍🌈
