Love Cairo so much I don’t think I want to come back
as LA is burning, a swath of the country is recovering from an ice storm, Alabama is preparing for up to 6” of snow and I’m praying for the TX power grid, a reminder:
we don’t need climate action just for future generations, we need it now.
the climate crisis is here, all around us
Yes — I said a $17 million decrease, which has been incorrectly reported as $23 million.
Multiple outlets are reporting this btw
Don’t forget that *wildfire smoke itself* is dangerous — especially for immunocompromised folks, pregnant people, and newborns
Please stay safe
Many of us originally from LA grew up with wildfires — but have *never* seen anything like this.
Friends of mine are telling me the scenes are apocalyptic— ash everywhere, Santa Monica evacuated, people can’t breathe
Climate change is *here*
Another reminder that LA cut the fire dept budget by more than $17 million this year
Planet Fitness locations in Los Angeles are “offering anyone impacted by the fires—first responders and residents—free access to shower, recharge, and relax”
No membership is required to take advantage of locker rooms, WiFi, charging stations at any LA County location not impacted by the fires.
I promise not to pull a Clarissa Ward
Not all of my journalist friends who are Egyptian fact-checking my IG stories
I swear I’m not a parachute journalist!
AOC: “Oh, I don’t think we’re witnessing the START of an oligarchy. I think we are fully here.” 🇺🇸
Made it to Egypt ❤️
“Prison is a place for lions,” she wrote on the wall of her cell using the charred stick. “Cowards and jackals, they only keep lions in such places. They keep them there because of their own fears.”

Twitter has gotten so scary — legit thinking of deleting my account
NEW: Armed conflict in Colombia has persisted for over six decades. The country’s leftist president, Gustavo Petro, has pledged to achieve “total peace,” but this promise seems ever more elusive. newlinesmag.com/reportage/co...
“We received 35 bodies today because they didn’t have refrigerators to store them there.”
Inside a Damascus morgue where families search for remains of those killed by the Assad regime.

NEW: At Damascus’ Palestine Branch prison, abhorrent conditions and limited access to facilities mean there is still much to uncover about the horrors that took place there.

Perfection.
Did some reporting on this awhile back — but if no one is looking into the epigenetic risks around Gazans experiencing famine — they should be
For those of us who are Bengali — and had ancestors live through the Bengal famine (tied to Churchill’s policies) we are at an unusually high risk of both insulin resistance and comorbidities like heart disease
In fact — some have argued that one reason South Asians are at such high risk for diabetes is because we developed insulin resistance, after generations of famines
Going to note that nutritional stunting — which is irreversible in some children experiencing malnutrition — can also permanently alter gene expression.
That means that future generations descended from Palestinians starving now may experience chronic disease
