These reflections speak directly to EqualyzAI’s mission: to build culturally grounded, community-driven AI that protects linguistic identity and ensures inclusion in the digital future.

And when asked about literacy and who gets to shape AI language resources, he offered a reminder that challenges many assumptions: Language is universal. It has nothing to do with educational level. The person society calls “illiterate” may be a better custodian of language than a PhD holder.

He emphasized that building meaningful AI systems requires more than collecting datasets. It requires shifting power: “The best way to get the best language data is to empower the owners of the language.”

His message was simple, but deeply urgent: He said “If language is the most fundamental expression of a people, then when it is not digitized, a whole essence of the people can be lost.

True innovation will come when African AI is designed to understand our languages, reflect our contexts, and respond to challenges uniquely ours—from the grassroots to the global stage.

In her words:
"We cannot import intelligence that is solving their realities to solve ours, when it doesn’t address our problems."
That message resonates deeply.
Because the future of AI in Africa cannot be built on borrowed assumptions.

Africa faces real challenges, shaped by our communities, histories, economies, and cultures. Yet too often, we attempt to apply intelligence built for entirely different realities to solve our own.

"The AI systems that are in place now only address major African languages."
