A black, single-layer cake. The top is decorated with a pastel-rainbow telescope and galaxy map behind it.
A different view of the cake, showing the galaxy map spilling over the side.
DESI finished its originally planned survey last night!! ..and will keep going :)
I made a cake to celebrate. 🌌🔭

Up next is Beloved. I listened to part on on my commute to work this morning (Toni Morrison is the narrator!) and I think it's going to be excellent.

I read a famous chapter where an antifascist partisan describes her traumatic memories from the massacre of a small town's land-owning fascists in-between two of my crisis hotline shifts and felt like it really captured how reasonable people can find themselves slipping towards doing horrific things

I finished For Whom the Bell Tolls yesterday. Truly incredible book. Hemingway is understated and forces you to infer characters' emotions until you get to the crescendos of the book and the effect makes those moments really hit hard.

Yeah, 10^8 seems to be about where things start getting spooky without some serious attention to detail in DESI LOWZ.

hey, if AI proponents hadn’t been making up nonsense about AI tools while forcing them on us, then maybe people wouldn’t reflexively block AI tools, even when they actually work. that’s not on normies for being rational consumers. that’s on AI proponents for being systematically full of shit

I still remember where I was when I learned she said this. It’s unironically a flashbulb memory for me.

A real treat to return to my old stomping grounds at the @uciphyssci.bsky.social for the advancement exam of my exceptional PhD student Patricia Fofie, who passed with flying colors on her research using numerical simulations to understand how super massive black hole feedback affects galaxy shapes

This is one of the videos the NYT has verified and links to in their reporting.
NYT: "Video verified by [NYT] showed ... rescuers digging through the rubble with building cranes and shovels, and piles of bloodied, dusty backpacks."

Since yesterday, the Einstein AI cheatbot website underwent some rebranding. The tagline changed from "Einstein does the busywork so you don't have to," to "Einstein is the personal tutor every student deserves." In the FAQ, "How does Einstein do all this?" became "How does Einstein help me learn?"

This is correct, but I also finally understood something from a really cool globular cluster simulation paper that was published when I was in fifth grade and want to make plots.

Yeah, I’m certainly impressed. But like you I’m not sure that a programming task with a painstakingly designed standard, formal and qualitative descriptions, tons of pedagogical walk throughs, and many reference implementations in the training set is a great analogy for all other programming tasks.

As an HIV hotline operator, I agree that the logistics are the most impressive part about this. I've heard people talk about trying to take a hundred loads in one day via cruising apps and even that level of planning is an unbelievably impressive undertaking.

It feels like a lobster trap to me. Once you’ve vibe coded something it’s basically unmaintainable by a human so you’re kind of stuck interacting with your code through that interface forever.

"Reporter: Do any of you have a favorite animal?
Child: My favorite one is a gold snake that can move. It has gold eyes, and it has a super-duper tail…
Reporter: Mr. Mamdani, the second question for you.
Mamdani: Yes. It’s also the golden snake."

I’m at the part in Moby Dick where Herman Melville spends pages upon pages just listing every white object he can think of, and I think this book might actually just be bad.

The more I think about it, the more I’m convinced the Democrats have to push their hand immediately. The parallels with the delays and subsequent failures after January 6th are blaring warning signs about what will happen if they don’t go after the issues with ICE and CBP at the root RIGHT NOW.

BREAM: Is the FBI investigating the ICE agent who shot Renee Good?
BLANCHE: What happened has been reviewed by millions of Americans bc it was recorded. We investigate when it's appropriate. That is not the case here. We are not going to bow to pressure. So no, we are not investigating.
