Trying to talk the 14-yr-old into watching some gunslinger films before his summer D&D campaign, pushing a Buster Keaton short:
I know you don't like silents, but there's this short called "Go West"
Like a minute & a half? 2?
No, longer, babe.
5 minutes?

a bear vacuuming a floor as a japanese salaryman looks on in terror
found out about the manga kuma gurashi which is like those ones where a manic pixie dream girl comes into a salaryman's life and starts doing all his domestic chores for him to heal his heart except in this one it's a realistically drawn bear and the salaryman is terrified on every single page

And The Road was only published in 2006. Quick arrival in curricula.
But serious talk Mother Night is much better than Slaughterhouse Five.
Maybe I should read Laughing Boy or A Hero Ain’t Nothing But A Sandwich, maybe those Island Trees librarians were on to more than Kurt Vonnegut.
That is the spirit of a lot of the other books in the original Pico lawsuit, which originated with a parents group with a list of bad books. It is a grab bag of concerns: Lots of black authors but also anthropology, drug scare books, moral panic stories. Things that make white parents anxious.
What felt great to 1988 me was that this allegedly dirty book was pretty funny, but also that the obscenity wasn’t zoo sex but the fire-bombing of cities.
1988 me was sure that old ass book was a classic and the courts had justly recognized that. Who would do that now for—I don’t know—2020’s All Boys Aren’t Blue or 2019’s Gender Queer? Those feel very recent to old me.
I think a lot about Vonnegut being in the thick of the Pico vs Island Trees School District, which won the fight for diverse books in libraries in 1982 with a case going back to 1975 claims of having the right to read Slaughterhouse Five in the school library. What contemporary is there to that?
It's like a blank check forever
Holy shit dude
