The fight against fascism is also a fight for a shared sense of reality. We see demagogues twisting the facts and blatantly lying, while legacy media are keen to present every story as a matter of conflicting interpretations. With social media drowning in #AIslop, this is only going to get worse

this is what synthetic media (deep fakes etc.) was always about -- the main danger isn't that it will fool everyone, but that it gives those who are already inclined to a certain viewpoint, consciously or not, the fire they need to deny reality

One of the things that genuinely shocked me as I read through surveillance logs for the police is how much of their energy and attention is dedicated to shutting down vigils and other ceremonies of remembrance.

Bravo to the writers already pulling out of Writers' Week!

I think any show associated with the broader Adelaide Festival should also reconsider their participation in the line-up. Let's not split hairs, it's the AF Board who have done this. They should feel the boycott across the Festival.

Robert Wilson, Provocative Playwright and Director, Is Dead at 83

Amazing how the NYT obituary for Robert Wilson doesn't mention his 1995 installation work H.G., which is not only credited with spurring the use of "immersive" in relation to art/theatre but also directly inspired Punchdrunk's style of theatre.

STEWART: “Comedy doesn’t change the world, but it’s a bellwether— we’re the banana peel in the coal mine… authoritarians are the threat to comedy, music, art, thought… progress.”

Nailed it.

Tears on Stage: Bob Dylan Pauses Mid-Song After Learning of Charlie Kirk's Passing
It was meant to be just another night on tour — a full arena, the crowd hanging on every lyric — until Bob Dylan suddenly stopped mid-song.
He stepped back from the mic, his eyes shining under the stage lights. The band went completely silent.
"They just told me.." Dylan's voice trembled. "Charlie
Kirk has passed."
For a long, heavy moment, no one moved. Then Dylan whispered, "This one's for him," and began playing a raw, stripped-down version of Blowin' in the Wind.
Fans were overcome with emotion as the song became a quiet prayer.
What Dylan said after the final chord - his last words to the audience - left the world in stunned silence.

Some of the high quality content Zuckerberg’s platform is algorithmically shoveling into the brains of American consumers. This story is 100% made up, in case that wasn’t obvious.

This is simply untenable. There is no way forward with media and political classes captured by the right. Every time someone commits a crime you have to pray it's not an undesirable or it's purge time, then when it turns out to be themselves again they just shrug and wait for the next one.

every time I see a notable media person say something odd about the notable person who was killed this week, I remember how working at CJR taught me many white journalists find it easier to sympathize and empathize with right wing individuals than non-white journalists they actually work with

I shouldn't be shocked, but I'm still always brought up short to realize how many people think "civility" means "white people speaking in relatively calm voices" no matter what vile shit they say.

The reporting on Charlie Kirk’s killer in the UK & US highlights again how fundamentally ill equipped mainstream media is to report on political violence in the digital age.

They do not know anything about online far right meme culture & it’s starting to do real harm. #r4today
