A little late announcing this, but we wanted to make sure everything was signed first. @virusnerdette.bsky.social Lynda Coughlan and I received some funding to make and test an H5 avian influenza vaccine in chickens. #influenza #vaccine #H5N1

Very honored to be on this list given how pheonomeal the other scientists are. Seeing the breadth of research areas in virology covered here, as well as the talent of all the PIs and their teams, makes me optimistic for the future of science. #lovevirology 🦠 🧬

Had a blast hosting another science panel at @creationent.bsky.social ‘s Star Trek convention- this time in New Jersey #STNJ. The audience was incredible - so engaged and knowledgeable. Live long and prosper people! 🖖 ❤️
Some of you already know I’m a massive sci fi nerd, so I was incredibly excited to get the opportunity to give a talk/ host a science panel at Creation Entertainment’s ST-LV: Trek to Vegas Convention 2025!! Thanks @creationent.bsky.social - The audience were amazing! So many cool questions! 🖖
The shoebill stork looks like a dinosaur.. 🦖
Such a beautiful looking bird… 🐦
Had a fabulous time at the American Society for Virology 2025 annual meeting in Montreal #ASV2025 - awesome catching up with friends and colleagues, and my team did great with their presentations and posters!
Ahh! I am blown away! I’ve been complaining I need a white board in my office, as during meetings I scribble on sticky notes and papers and the like - and today they surprised me with one !! ❤️ 🖤 💛 🧬 🦠
The International Symposium on Avian Influenza is coming up soon, and really looking forward to meeting colleagues again. If you cant make it in person, fear not, we will be fully hybrid!

2024 was quite the year for veterinary virology! Read all about how @amersocvirology.bsky.social brought the community together and facilitated discussions & networking (generously funded by #usda_nifa). The Ag/vet sector needs virologists now more than ever! #lovevirology doi.org/10.1128/jvi....
I made it to Liverpool! Better late than never! Looking forward to some cool science. Come see the virus forms (fora?) - especially our one on RNA in Viral Replication, 2:45pm Tues, level 1, hall 11C! #lovevirology #Microbio25 #MicroSoc25 (hedging my bets with the tags @microbiologysociety.org )
Today @natmedicine.bsky.social published our study showing the older individuals born prior to 1968 have more antibodies that cross-react to #H5N1 relative to younger individuals. If H5N1 causes a pandemic, children will likely be the most susceptible. 1/2

Congratulations to @microbiologysociety.org for meeting S2O targets for their J Gen Virology and J Med Micro journals, enabling open access for all. The S2O model is the most sustainable for societies to provide OA publications. Onward for other journals and for @asm.org as well!
Why are H13 and H16 restricted to gulls? H13 prefers fucosylated α2-3 sialosides, which were distributed widely in the respiratory tract and intestines of gulls but not in the colon of ducks. How cool.

Hi everyone, to counter the doomscrolling, I would like to put out there that I am looking to recruit a postdoc to start this spring/summer- preferably someone with prior virology experience. Please forward. Thank you! #virologysky #lovevirology #sciencesky umd.wd1.myworkdayjobs.com/UMCP/job/Uni...
USDA says it accidentally fired officials working on bird flu and is trying to rehire them
In a statement, an Agriculture Department spokesperson told NBC News that officials are "working to swiftly rectify the situation."

I get 0 hours annual leave. Really. I tried to book some and HR told me I don’t get any. Lol!
A third spillover of H5N1 into dairy cows...this time in Arizona. Genotype D1.1 again. Enhanced milk surveillance picked this up like in Nevada. Enhanced surveillance finds more cases...
An H5N1 serosurvey paper was released in MMWR Weekly today . Three of 150 vets had detectable neutralizing or HAI antibodies.

Dear Virology Community, please see ASV’s statement to our members and the scientific community. asv.org/asv-statemen...
looking for labs in blue states who will be hiring technicians (recent grads). i want to get a list together to share with some very talented UGs & would appreciate the info! Please repost if you don't mind! thanks :)
This is bad news. It suggests reassortment of circulating H5N1 viruses with viruses containing N9 NA.
Although this indicates reassortment with avian viruses, it's still bad. Reassortment makes pandemics. The last 3/4 flu pandemics (and likely 1918 too) were reassortant viruses.
Really proud to share our preprint describing early adaptation of H5N1 to US dairy cattle, and showing how these mutations enhance the ability of the virus to infect other mammals, such as pigs and humans.
With @influenzal.bsky.social @vidhid.bsky.social @drclairesmith.bsky.social and many more!
Lab Christmas party (pictured)- check; department Christmas party- check; college Christmas party - check. Time for the holidays.

California reported its first #H5N1 #birdflu infected dairy herds on Aug. 30. Today, less than 3 months later, the state's infected herd count topped 400. The vast majority of these herds are still in quarantine for the infection. How is this not affecting availability of/pricing of milk?
