The successful applicant will also be eligible to apply for support for undergraduate summer research students. The position will involve teaching inorganic chemistry and laboratory, as well as general or organic chemistry, depending on the candidate’s area of expertise. A completed Ph.D. in Chemistry is preferred, but applicants who have substantially completed their Ph.D. will be considered. The normal teaching load is one lecture and two laboratory sections per term, for each of the three 10-week terms comprising the academic year. We seek a chemist who is strongly committed to teaching undergraduates in a liberal arts environment and who can help further our community goals in the areas of fairness, belonging, and respect. Carleton provides support for all aspects of faculty work through long-standing College and Department mentoring programs, cohort activities for new faculty, Provost's Office support, extensive optional programming by our Perlman Center for Learning and Teaching, and funding for student-faculty research. Electrochemical Aerobic Epoxidation of Styrenes Catalyzed by Manganese Tetraphenylporphyrin Oxygen atom transfer (OAT) is a useful reaction in chemical synthesis, but because of the low reactivity of O2 with organic substrates, harsh oxidants are often required. In contrast, metalloenzymes such as Cytochrome P450 catalyze a wide range of OAT reactions under mild conditions with O2 as the source of the O atoms. In this work, we use a synthetic manganese porphyrin catalyst to mimic this reactivity. Our method enables electrochemical epoxidation of styrenes using O2 through the generation of a Mn-superoxo intermediate. We report the reactivity of 12 styrene derivatives, with yields impacted by the position and electronic properties of the substituents. Spectroelectrochemical analyses indicate the generation of high-valent intermediates that enable epoxidation under these mild conditions.

So proud of my students for seeing this project to the end! We've published a method for O2 activation using metalloporphyrin electrocatalysts and used it for epoxidation of styrenes. Check it out in JOC: pubs.acs.org/doi/full/10....

A heartfelt thank you to all the grad programs that just let me upload my letter of recommendation. I hate answering, "Is this candidate excellent (top 15%), amazing (top 5%), or truly exceptional (top 2%)?" I don't know, man! Read my letter! And don't make me pit my students against each other.

Mechanism of catalyst activation in iron(porphyrin)-catalysed aerobic oxidative cleavage of 2,3-dimethylindole Ferric porphyrins catalyse the aerobic oxidative cleavage of 2,3-dimethylindole, mimicking dioxygenase enzymes. The data herein suggest that the indole reduces the FeIII(porphyrin) to FeII(porphyrin) ...

I'm excited to share the first publication out of the Brezny lab! We explored some unexpected reactivity of an indole with metalloporphyrins. Thank you to all my awesome students that contributed to this work.

I will second the CH Instruments. Depending on the capabilities you need, the Pine WaveNow potentiostats are also nice. They can't do IR compensation, for example, but for simple CV or bulk electrolysis experiments, they work quite well.
