"My colleagues at Airwars are tracking upwards of 80 separate incidents of civilian casualties so far between U.S. and Israeli strikes. That number will likely rise.
I find this shameful, frankly"

NEW: Amid intense global debate on military AI, an Airwars investigation identifies the first civilian the US military has accepted killing in an AI-supported strike

But when The Independent and Airwars asked the U.S. military to confirm if the strike involved AI, it said it had "no way of knowing whether this strike is one of the 85 [AI supported strikes]"
The U.S. military ultimately acknowledged that it killed Abdul-Rahman, and his family shared a condolence letter sent from a brigadier general in the U.S. air force.
The family said they had had ‘No recognition, just misery’ from the U.S. military since Abdul-Rahman's death.
"My dad remains deeply depressed. My mother [every time] she is reminded of her baby boy she breaks down," Abdul-Rahman's brother Anmar said.
But it later emerged that up to three civilians were killed, including 20-year-old student Abdul-Rahman Al-Rawi.
Airwars tracked down his family in Al Qaim, in western Iraq.
The strikes happened in February 2024 in western Iraq - with the U.S. targeting command and control centers and rocket launchers of Iraqi militias.
At the time, a top U.S. military official boasted the targets were identified with the assistance of AI.

Drawing on case studies, the authors outline the dangers from the continued use of explosive weapons by endorsing states.
Measures, including restraint & avoidance, weapon-specific restrictions & systematic civilian harm tracking, must be implemented to prevent further harm.
Airwars' Megan Karlshøj-Pedersen & Joe Emmett, with @lauraboillot.bsky.social of Article 36, argue that endorsers of the Explosive Weapons in Populated Areas Declaration must move beyond commitment & focus on implementing measures to protect civilians.
