Hey all I'm looking for work!
I'm experienced in character design and costume for games and film as well as illustration for books and TTRPGS. I'm based out of BC Canada looking for freelance or full time. My portfolio is linked in the first comment, thank you for shares!

Most of us did not choose to write or draw or design so that we could put products on the shelf. We chose to do it because it’s a set of skills we enjoy exercising, that give us fulfillment.

It’s like asking a pro pitcher to just let a machine pitch for them. Fuck off and give me the ball.

This is such a misunderstanding of why writers, artists, and designers do research to begin with, which is to find something unexpected, not capture the average or find reference for the default.

And, as always, the biggest misapprehension: We don’t want to NOT do this part. It’s fun to learn shit

Chris Terrio did Rise of Skywalker (and Batman v Superman, and Justice League) and hasn’t been let near a franchise since. Derek Connolly got a credit on RoS for writing the Trevorrow version of the movie.

This convo I had highlights the difference in what "respect your time" means in games.

A lot of players want to trade time for in-game progress. It's purely transactional: 1 hour = 1 progress

But I want to feel like my actions matter i.e. what I do with time creates progress, not time itself.

If kids’ schools trained them for work based on what everyone thought the hot new technology was going to be, both my kids would have spent the past several years learning about the blockchain. This is why schools don’t attempt to do workplace training: life is pretty long.

we need to have a better standard for what we take as facts and evidence of something yesterday. if you're going to survive the misinformation age you need to be diligent about verifying everything, almost especially the stuff that reinforces what you already believe.

Oh sick I didn’t realize Steam was developing games all by itself

I mean this in the most earnest way possible. If your points of reference for storytelling all come from cartoons I BEG you to read more books. There’s so much more variety out there, so much that hasn’t been distilled through 80 different hands & a single corporation’s S+P department.

What's funny is this is also the mindset you should have to make good art.

an underappreciated skill in game design is "lying to players." games only exist in a player's mind!! you can change the nature of the game without changing its core logic by just telling players that the logic is something different!!

I'm trying to comment on this without being hyperbolic.

As a manager, insisting on deadlines that you and your ICs straight up don't believe are possible almost GUARANTEES that a) their work will be thrown out or completely redone and b) you will put them in danger of burning out.

Every industry is quietly eroding the leverage you have as an independent artist. Whether it’s streamers obfuscating metrics of success or corporate mergers stifling competition, they want you on your back foot. Be an advocate for yourself and your relationship with an audience.

Hoping this drives midjourney into the dirt and sets genAI back a thousand years.
But the real fight is going to be rewriting copyright law and redefining personal ownership. It’s happening right now and it’s a fight where corporations are emphatically NOT on our side.

People and media often say Balatro was made by 'one guy'. I feel like that unfortunately may be stoking the flames of this David vs. Goliath narrative a tiny bit

No it was not 'one guy', look at the dang in-game credits

Mario Kart World absolutely rules but it is such a bummer that there's no local multiplayer in Free Roam. That was the thing my kids were most excited about.

free advice for game developers: try to make the next smash hit video game, such as grand theft auto. if you do, you'll be making more than just a video game – you'll be making millions of dollars

I really loved Sea of Stars. It’s propulsive and focused in a way many recent 2D RPGs haven’t been and that aspect really clicked for me.
