we're all tired of the, frankly, bullshit candidates that tend to run in seats like this. R+10 often gets you some suit with rich friends and a platform written by someone who's never been to the state. That's not what's happening here.

Aftyn's the real deal.

Contact Congress, Cabinet and News Agencies: phone numbers/addresses/emails

I added a calendar on my spreadsheet (3rd tab). We can focus our voices to flood offices in an organized way. Reach out to as many as you can. All of this is bigger than a “I only represent my constituents” issue.
Use/share the sheet (bit.ly/Nokings). Speak up. Unrelentingly. We deserve better ❤️‍🩹🤍💙

Lots to process here folks...

While I suspected that, as the president-elect of the (former) "collective bargaining unit" (aka: "union"), I might be targeted for separation in dreaded DOGE-induced State Department layoffs, it still came as a bit of a surprise that I, along with hundreds of others, received my "pink slip" this morning from the Department of State.

But it was the sense of "here's your notice, clear your things by 5:00 pm, and don't let the door hit you on the way out" feeling of it all that really took me back. After devoting one's entire professional life to an organization, you'd think there would be a bit more, shall we say, nobility in the process. But alas, 'twas not to be.

Enough of this licking wounds. I'm fine. Really.

The things that REALLY matter in my life - the long-term things - are all well. The wife has yet to sue for divorce. The kids don't recoil in fear at the sound of my voice. And the Bishop has not sought my excommunication - at least not today. So, my life at the end of a 37-year run, I have nothing to do but thank the United States Government for the opportunity to represent my country around the world.

Perhaps it is mounting geriatric cynicism but... what kind of message has all this sent to those still devoted full time to the "diplomatic element of national power?" Will those considering entering such a profession - one that demands a similar level of responsibility, commitment, flexibility, judgement, dedication, and overtime as comparable private sector jobs that pay much more
- look favorably on such a career? Especially with the understanding that the customary expectations of career progression and security that comes (came) with federal service are no more? I'll leave that decision to them and hope that our nation can still attract the high caliber of diverse (yes, I said it), dedicated, patriotic Americans to staff the halls of our Embassies overseas and see to our national interests in the ways that ONLY the Foreign Service can.

Not to mention those who are still IN the Service. Can they really feel on Monday morning that they work for an organization that "has their backs?"

While I hope so, I'm not so sure. Again, that's up to them.

For all those in the Foreign Service - Departments of State, Commerce, Agriculture, USAID, APHIS, or USAGM - I promise you that, starting this Tuesday, I will do all I can to hold leadership's feet to the fire to make sure they live up to the commitments they have made to you and your families. AFSA remains the Professional Association of the Foreign Service.

It will do everything it can to make sure the professional standards we live by remain the standard the world's diplomats aspire to. I look forward to doing my part in this new chapter of my service to my country - and to you.

Regards,
-dink-

🇺🇸 A Different Kind of Outrage 😲

Everone at Foggy Bottom knows Dink. The joke is that he joined right after Benjamin Franklin. Most recently, after almost 4 decades of service, he was elected to head AFSA (the union for U.S. diplomats).

He was fired yesterday.

The disrespect is intentional.

The Government does not ask for complete stays of the injunctions, as it ordinarily does before this Court. Why? The answer is obvious: To get such relief, the Government would have to show that the Order is likely constitutional, an impossible task in light of the Constitution’s text, history, this Court’s precedents, federal law, and Executive Branch practice. ...
The gamesmanship in this request is apparent and the Government makes no attempt to hide it. Yet, shamefully, this Court plays along. A majority of this Court decides that these applications, of all cases, provide the appropriate occasion to resolve the question of universal injunctions and end the centuries-old practice once and for all. In its rush to do so the Court disregards basic principles of equity as well as the long history of injunctive relief granted to non-parties.

Sotomayor: Trump knew his birthright citizenship order was unconstitutional, so he went after the universal injunctions.

Rev Barber has been a leader in the struggle for democracy since long before Indivisible formed. Was honored to have him open up the D.C. Hands Off rally with 100k people earlier this month. When he speaks, we listen - his moral leadership is an inspiration.

📢 New pub: Defining #soil science: Balancing fundamental research and societal needs, in Soil Science Society of America Journal doi.org/10.1002/saj2...
@teamrat.bsky.social & I argue, soil science, though crucial for solving environmental challanges, should not be defined solely by its applications

Fargo-Moorhead had over 2000 people show up for our Hands Off protest. It was about four times more than what we expected! And tons of support of honking from the traffic driving by💪🏽 thanks @indivisible.org

@schumer.senate.gov If you vote for cloture you are a stain on this country’s history that will never go away. You are willingly passing power to a tyrant in waiting, and you are a disgrace to every oath of office any senator has ever sworn. Your legacy will be one of cowardice and contempt.

Blake Allen on Twitter: “Be prepared for an eruption in base anger that Democrats have not really experienced in a long time if they give Republicans the votes for cloture. They are not happy with the direction the party is going, and it will be seen as a surrender to Trump’s impounding of funds/DOGE”

We want Democrats to play hardball and use their leverage to stop the Trump-Musk coup.

Big difference between the two also being that FDR pushed his agenda through the correct way — through Congress— and his programs impacted many people in a good way.

I maxed out my credit card, emptied my savings account, and took out a loan to move from Alabama to Bethesda, MD. I don’t even qualify for unemployment since I’ve only worked at NIH for a month. I will be financially and medically devastated.

Seeking suggestions for anywhere that’s hiring!!

We lost one postdoc and three support scientists. Another unit we work closely with lost three new scientists. All good, hard-working scientists.

Another example of what cutting science funding is doing to our leading university research programs in the U.S.: dismantling things like the Soybean Innovation Lab at UIUC, which have made US crop yields dramatically higher.

I don’t post often, you may have noticed. But today I watched a film I’m doing a small role in. It’s called The Electric State. In my humble opinion it is a gorgeous, fun, often funny and ultimately moving film gorgeously performed by my colleagues and masterfully directed by Russo Bros. Hope u love

Mark this down. Trump wants to eradicate the FDIC so he can crash the American economy and he and his oligarchs can buy up America for 20 cents on the dollar.

Recent advances in #soilscience all point toward potential for internal soil nitrogen cycling to meet a much greater proportion of crop N needs than currently thought! 🌾🦠🤎 🧑‍🌾🧪
