That's been my usual MO, but the last two years I've waited until April because I owe the Feds and I'll be damned if I give this administration a cent any earlier than necessary.

Mass-market edition. A snowy, icy mountainscape at night. Prominent in the foreground is an ice-covered spire jutting out of the ground with two human faces, one feminine, the other masculine. In lovely 3D text is the name of the book

A starburst, bifurcated vertically. On the left half, it is white at the center and fades to a pale sky blue near the edge; the right half is black at the center, and fades to a slightly darker sky blue. Behind the starburst is a field of stars

On a reread of *The Left Hand of Darkness*. It's even better than I remembered.

Really wish they had used the wild cover from the mass market version for the recent paperback release. I forget why I first bought it 20 years ago (I had never heard of UKLG), but I suspect the cover played a role.

I think the most horrific example that I’ve ever come across was the doctor who wore shoes created from the skin of Black people. Just atrocious mind-numbing dehumanizing practices all throughout the history of this country

2) Tomes and Talismans

Can't really remember anything about these shows other than that they were low-budget public TV productions

About time. I like to take the bus when I can, but don’t ride frequently enough to remember where to hold the QR code, so I always get it wrong the first time

On a gradient background with the asexual flag colors, text reads, “Happy International Asexuality Day.” The HRC logo appears.

Happy International Asexuality Day!

Asexual, often called “ace” for short, refers to a complete or partial lack of sexual attraction or lack of interest in sexual activity with others.

Just pondering how hard it is to describe blindness to people.

Me: "I can't see shapes that well."

Them: "So it's blurry."

Me: "Nope, clear as a bell but I can't tell what it is."

Them: *bluescreen*

My cat has an uncanny knack of knowing how absorbed I am in reading. She runs up and starts demanding attention the moment I get engrossed in a story, then feigns disinterest and wanders off when I acknowledge her.

Typical cat nonsense.

"You could be someone kidnapping her!"

"Floors in an apartment." She shook her head. "Moby you know you're the man."
"Ha, thanks," I said.
"No, not like that. You're a rich WASP from Connecticut and you live in a five-level penthouse. You're 'The Man.' As in, 'stick it to The Man.' As in the person they guillotine in the revolution."

Another mini-article featuring a refrigerator with a screen on its door

Today: LG's Internet refrigerator ($8,000) and TV refrigerator ($3,000; lge.com) come with a Web pad or a television in the door. Samsung's Bottom Mount Refrigerator/Freezer ($900;
samsungusa.com) features two different cooling systems for the freezer and refrigerator. This allows for better humidity control, which keeps food fresh longer.
Tomorrow: New cooling technology will keep fruits and vegetables fresh twice as long and will operate virtually silently. RFID technology will manage food inventory, and cameras will allow remote monitoring.

They've been trying to foist internet-enabled fridges on us for decades and I've yet to see one in the wild.

Here's one from 2001 and another from 2004 (both from Popular Science)

Google Slides is doing this too. When you make a new document, it "helpfully" offers to generate slides for you from a text prompt. Every page has a "beautify this slide" button. Every text box has a button to improve the text with AI.

It gets in my way and I hate it

Now reading: *The Wind's Twelve Quarters*, a collection of short stories by the inimitable Ursula K Le Guin. Every story has been a delight so far. And despite being 50–60 years old, none of them feel dated at all.
