But I guess we get the new Bolt for a year, so at least there's that.

There are currently only FOUR TOTAL FUNCTIONING PUBLIC HYDROGEN STATIONS IN THE ENTIRE USA!

1 in Sacramento
1 in the bay area
2 in the LA area

Additionally the station that connects SF and LA is no where to be seen, as well as the Truckee station.

Hydrogen is so fucked

They should give everyone in Costco a taser, and if you do something stupid, everyone gets to tase you. Block an aisle with your cart? Tased. Taking too long to pick an item? Tased. Too old? Tased.

Now seems like a good time to remind people that the gasoline you put in your car is HEAVILY subsidized. While you’re worried about EV drivers paying “their fair share” remember how much of our tax dollars go into your stupidly inefficient vehicle!

Ngl I fucking love the interior of this thing

I say that but actually the upcoming Subaru Uncharted would meet all your criteria

Those companies are wholly incapable of making good, bespoke EVs, ESPECIALLY Mazda. Reliability is less of a concern when it comes to EVs, much less to break, and GM is kinda killing it in the EV space atm

Not quite 300 mile range but the 2027 Bolt sounds like the exact kind of car you’re looking for. Unless you want a 150 mile Slate, you’re not gonna find a car without a touchscreen.

Idk who needs to hear this, but you don’t have to buy a new Tesla. Nobody’s making you do that. There are better, cheaper, and safer EV options. Hell, you could even buy a used Tesla!

I have seen WAY too many new poverty-spec model-ys recently. GUYS THERE ARE BETTER OPTIONS! PLEASE!

I should’ve qualified my statement with Honda can’t engineer their own EV *without sending them all to the crusher after only 3 years*

What…. Who… why does that exist?

The real issue is not enough garage space!

They’re a bunch of cowards who have been dragging their feet for decades on EVs, instead choosing to launch a plugin hybrid hydrogen car

This is almost certainly rage-bait but I had to see this monstrosity so now you do too. This is not how ANY of that works!

We found out it is *technically* possible to roadtrip a hydrogen car

This is speaking only for electric cars I should clarify. I know nothing about gas cars and if they use this same architecture

1 month ago 1 0 1 0

That is partially true, most cars before ~2015 did not use this type of architecture, but today most major automakers (Tesla, Rivian, Lucid, GM, VW, Hyundai, Kia, Mercedes, Ford) use a single TCU to handle all communications. It significantly reduces costs and complexity of the architecture.

This is hard to explain in a comment: all external communication in a vehicle occurs through the “TCU”. This is everything from apple CarPlay, to car keys, to OTAs. While Apple doesn’t control this, they do have a say in the cybersecurity, or they won’t approve the car to use their software

1000% agree. I want to be very clear that I support harsher regulations. I apologize if my analogies came off as libertarian, that is not my goal. My goal was to emphasize how consumer-manufacturer relations function when it comes to ISO and SAE standards. Not saying it’s a good system by any means.

1 month ago 3 0 1 0

It is very understandable for people to be concerned about cybersecurity and it is sad how weak US safety regulations are, but I hope people can understand what systems are in place so they know what to look for when buying a vehicle. I’m not saying it’s a great system, just stating the facts.

CAFE standards enable less safe vehicles. My instance on how regulation work is based on the fact that I am a vehicle electronics engineer who deals with this stuff on a daily basis. FSR, HARA, ASIL, all very complex topics that go far beyond what can be explained in a bluesky comment.

1 month ago 1 0 1 0

That, and lobby for stricter safety requirements.

1 month ago 2 0 1 0

US safety standards are far behind the rest of the world, especially with CAFE standards encouraging more dangerous vehicles. The current administration also has been deregulating automotive safety. It’s a genuine problem. The best thing to do is due diligence when buying a car.
