"The right’s characterization of higher education is a fiction. Students across the ideological spectrum feel free to express themselves, think their education is worth the cost and don’t think their views are silenced." Only 3% of Republican students feel out of place on campus for their views.

Putting the worst people in charge of America may have been a bad idea:
"Turns out the government actually does stuff, and if we want it to continue to do stuff competently, we might need people in charge who AREN’T lunatics. I had the whole thing backward."

Are ICE agents being deployed to Orlando International Airport? An airport spokesperson told me they haven’t heard anything about it yet from federal partners www.orlandoweekly.com/news/orlando...

@jamellebouie.net check out how the Heritages Foundation and conservative scholars are revising the life of Frederick Douglass, it's in keeping with this as someone who rejected organizing and collective action for someone who just petitioned the government.
Did a ‘union buster’ really file a federal disclosure report from the grave?

In addition to talking points for HB 743, emails I obtained through a records request show a lobbyist for Do No Harm also wrote an op-ed in support of the bill. It was later published word-for-word by FloridaPolitics under both the Senate and House bill sponsors' names.
Gender-affirming medical care is already banned for trans youth (and restricted for adults) in FL under state law. This new bill would have added more teeth to that. Still, despite advancing in the House, it failed to get a floor vote by either chamber before the end of session.
New: Records I obtained show Do No Harm, a national group fighting "gender ideology," emailed draft language + talking points to the sponsor of a FL bill (HB 743) this session that sought to penalize anyone who aids or abets gender-affirming care for youth www.orlandoweekly.com/news/florida...
The politicians and activists pushing these attacks are part of a well-funded and coordinated nationwide effort to remove trans people from public life.
We can fight for the future our families deserve. Resist these attempts to push people into the shadows based on who they are or who they love.
Later, he said he wouldn’t have found his way into philosophy and social theory if he hadn’t experienced confronting the reality of Nazi crimes as a young man. He recalled that “you saw suddenly that it was a politically criminal system in which you had lived”.
Jürgen Habermas remains an indispensable guide to the unfinished project of democratic consciousness and enlightenment, wrote Peter E. Gordon in 2016. www.thenation.com/article/arch...
5/ This is my memorial to him. I learned over the years that he was this way to other young scholars as well. He does not deserve his name to be mentioned and I ask that people reading this post to treat students and young scholars with dignity and respect.
4/ I did not try to engage in these or other confrontations over the years, I just ignored him. But I always said I would one day publicly disclose his behavior when I read his obituary and learned of his passing. And that day is today.
3/ Luckily he did not know what the fuck he was talking about and I was able to write a response with evidence which demonstrated that he was a petty asshole that just felt threaten by me as a scholar and my forthcoming work as possibly a "revision" of his work on the same subject.
2/ When I was publishing my first monograph he contacted the Editorial Board of the press to tell them that my research was shoddy, gave them a list of things he though was a reason not to give me a contract.
1/ A historian passed away who I found to be abusive to me as a graduate student and junior scholar. While in my PhD program he wrote me a 9 page letter telling me that he couldn't believe the program I was in would accept someone like me and their standards must have gone down.
There are so many jaw-dropping passages in this piece it's hard to pick one to quote, but ...
In 1966 the New Jersey Young Republicans gleefully sang racist and antisemitic songs at their gatherings. The lyrics to one went “Riding the Reich in my Mercedes Benz, shooting every kike, saving all my friends." Hartford Courant, 13 February 1966.
