Sybil Ludington (1761–1839) was a courageous young patriot who, at just 16 years old, made a daring nighttime ride to rally American militia forces during the Revolutionary War. On the night of April 26, 1777, she rode over 40 miles (more than 2x as long as Paul Revere’s 18-mile ride) through stormy weather in Putnam County, New York, to alert colonial troops of a British attack on nearby Danbury, Connecticut. The daughter of Colonel Henry Ludington, a militia commander, Sybil volunteered to spread the alarm when no other messenger was available. Her determined ride—longer and more dangerous than Paul Revere’s—successfully gathered hundreds of soldiers in time to confront the British forces. Though little-known in her lifetime, Sybil’s bravery was later recognized as a remarkable example of youthful patriotism and female heroism. Today, she stands as a symbol of the often-overlooked contributions women and girls made to the fight for American independence.
