If these elections had gone the other way — if the Democratic Party had underperformed or even lost one of these contests — then every commentator under the sun would say, rightfully, that Democrats were in disarray; that even the president’s deep unpopularity couldn’t keep them afloat with voters.

But Tuesday was a Democratic victory. And the party didn’t just win — it won by commanding majorities on virtually every field of play. In polls, in focus groups and now at the ballot box, the public is telling us something very clearly: Trump is simply too much. If this is an opportunity for Democrats to win back lost ground — and it is — then it is also a warning to a Republican Party that has tied its entire identity to the man from Mar-a-Lago.

i closed out my column this week with this preemptive jab at basically every commentator currently looking for ways to say that last night didn’t count

The Value of Joy By canceling Joy Reid’s cable news show, MSNBC has not only silenced a brilliant host: It’s silenced the next Black voice you haven’t yet heard.

Cancelling @joyannreid.bsky.social means the door she held open for the next generation of Black voices will slam shut. Without her, the next her, won't get platformed by white media. That, of course, is why white media pushed her out.

Heart. Hair. Hands. #bhm days 4,5 and 6.

Black History Month might need to last all year for me to do these posts, but I’m ok w/that. We’re gonna need some timeline cleanses over the next couple months. Take a break from doomscrolling and look at these cuties inspired by my recent school visits.

2/19: MSNBC celebrates its NAACP Image Award and Joy Reid’s book Medgar & Myrlie.

2/22: Trump calls MSNBC a “threat to democracy” after NBCUniversal’s lawsuit settlement.

2/23: Joy Reid ( @joyannreid.bsky.social ) canceled.

When Trump sent the heat, @MSNBC.com bent the knee—AGAIN!

A tweet by Michael McFaul (@McFaul) that reads: "In 2012, when I was the US ambassador to Russia, Putin shut down USAID inside Russia. Why? Because their work supported free markets, democracy, human rights — ie causes that threatened Putin's dictatorship. Shutting down USAID is exactly what autocrats all over the world want."

Putin is full out celebrating our idiocy.

So maybe in some parts of my life I’ll be staying angry and raising Hell, here I’ll be trying to put the H in #BHM and celebrating Black History and Heritage. Hope you’ll join me.

I’ll try to go live when I can to make some art every day. Hopefully.

We are fighting tyranny, fascism. authoritarianism on top of humanitarian, social and climate crises. It’s too many things. I’m angry. I’m scared. I’m overwhelmed. But I’m not Hopeless. My art has to be Hopeful. It has to have Heart. I want it to Help and Heal.

I’m up late thinking about this. For #BHM this year I wanted to do another drawing challenge. 8 years ago my Black History Month drawings celebrating Black Women were an attempt at joy in the face of patriarchy and racism. This time is different.
