They can all be yellow in the next update. Fecal has a 🇬🇧 🇺🇸 problem. We still tend to say faecal cos it makes us feel posh and / or greek. Fecal is clearly winning out though

The breadth of the whitelist of words (and what should be yellow) is a vexed question but I try to make it reasonably broad to keep things interesting

It’s not quite that simple. The tip is just to get across that you should never assume that Cluebot uses common words by preference but in practice valid 5 word referdle puzzles skew the words in unpredictable ways (not on a common-uncommon axis)

For now! But when I next update the puzzle set I’ll weed out this oddity

Yeah when I wrote the hint I wasn't thinking of this edge case. Have checked the stored puzzles and if you play referdle for the next decade (and I hope you do!) you will come across this less than once a year. Probably easier to weed out the weirdos (not trying to weirdo shame)

It all comes back to how puzzles are created. Word 5 is chosen first then words 1-3 are chosen and rigorously avoid repeat letters wherever possible. But they also avoid word 5 because the algorithm ‘knows’ the answer. So v occasionally the word selector is forced to pick a repeat letter word on w3

Yesterday’s puzzle was an unusual outcome of the algorithm. It wouldn’t be too hard for me to weed out that result so maybe i should do that.
