My dad, who has lived under a dictatorship, knows one when he sees one. His first text this morning is that we are now officially in a dictatorship. It is all pretty grim.

Donald Trump’s deployment of the military in Los Angeles over the objection of California leaders is an abuse of power and a dangerous escalation.

It’s what you would see in authoritarian states and it must stop.

Americans have the right to speak out and peacefully protest.

L.A. is a Mexican-American city. The majority of the population is made up of racial and ethnic minorities. We are all happy living together and really do not want to see our friends, neighbors and families being terrorized by federal robo-cops. This is bullshit.

I have a few more in my office on campus or lent out, and surely some are off my radar, but holy wow it’s been a good last few years for indie press short story collections.
