Sharing this around would be appreciated, friends. It's tough getting a gig right now and I've had so many heartbreaking near misses recently that I could really use a win. I work hard as hell, ya know I'm good for it.

Yay! It'd be great to see ya!
Bumping for the nighttime/Bluesky is functioning better crew! Honestly do not feel pressured to donate if you're not up to it right now, there's already been plenty of generous folks, we just want to see your lovely faces! Have a fun free night in space!
As always, all funds go towards Bit Bash, the (soon to be reborn!) VGA Foundation, and our upcoming indie game microgrants program, so any donation is tax deductible!
Folks have been asking for more Bit Bash events, so we're launching Lil' Bits, intimate game events at some of our favorite joints around Chicago! We're gonna try to make all these pop-ups Pay What You Can, so chip in if you're able, but if you're tight on dough, have a nice free night out with us!
Great ending. Got to spend an afternoon with my best friend @wondroushippo.biz, my dear @theironkurtain.bsky.social, then catch the very fun Over Your Dead Body and grab a lil dinner with @sagecoffey.bsky.social and @chrisstallman.bsky.social. Been a tough few months, but sometimes I'm dang lucky.
It's great Beyond Fest expanded, I'm happy they did, but also Beyond Fest deserved @musicboxtheatre.bsky.social. They're lucky to have us, we're happy to have them. It's a great reminder, come to Chicago and care about us, we'll care about you. What a great weekend, can't wait to see what's next.
Tonight I saw The Furious. A perfect movie for the crowd the Music Box can attract. The most fun I've had at a gorey martial arts flick in years. Ran into some strangers at the bar after who happened to be at the show and spent the night talking about how much fun we had.
Then Speed Racer.
Who knew when I saw it opening day 18 years ago, when it'd begin the process of changing my self and my identity but saw the rest of film culture dismiss it, that'd I'd be sitting in my favorite place in the world, surrounded my favorite people, watching it with a sold out crowd.
A great weekend at Beyond Chicago so far. It's been chaotic but wonderful. Finally got to see one of my favorite films of all time on screen with a sold-out crowd, The Taking of Pelham One Two Three, and it was such a great experience. Never imagined I'd get to do that.
Since we're doing this discourse again: the problem is that shows that would be best enjoyed as 22-episode seasons get 10, and shows that would be best enjoyed as 4-episode seasons get 8.
And The X-Files without all those monster of the week episodes is basically nothing, we've seen it. You need to see the day job, the routine, the characters at their most mundane. If movies are about a character's biggest moment, TV should be about a character's regular life.
I haven't been so excited for a show since Jordan Peele's Twilight Zone reboot than for Ryan Coogler's X-Files, but we agreed like, I think The X-Files might be impossible to make in 10-13 episodes? It's either all main plot and too long, or you do monsters of the week and there's not enough time.
I was talking to a friend about this. I understand the economics, but the reason I bump so hard off TV these days is the 6-13 episode format. Either you're padding out a feature or condensing a proper series. One gives you a lagging plot, the other leaves you with little time for what makes TV fun.
It’s time to start nicknaming ball players “Old Hoss” again
Going to the premiere on Friday!

One of my favorite games we've shown at Bit Bash!
A black and white still from the film Nadja. Karl Geary on the left, and Elina Löwensohn on the right
Went to see Nadja (1994) at the Siskel this evening with @bricepuls.com and I have to say it still holds up as one of the weirdest, kookiest vampire flicks, steeped in camp noir, Lynchian dream logic, and about a thousand cigarettes. 🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤
The Screendrafts Patreon is hands-down the best deal in podcasting. If you like movies, and ya got the scratch, it's an absolute must.

Putting the recliner button on the inside of the armrest at movie theaters was the act of a person who hates fat people and wants to subject them to Marx Brothers style calamity at random intervals.

I'm not in a place to do so, so please help out Marya and Robert. We don't know each other much but ran in the same circles for a hot sec and they both love this town and it's art so much. If you've got the means and ever gotten enjoyment from Chicago's film community, chip in. It's the thing to do.

Me and my partner watched A Star Is Born on TCM while prepping food for our Oscar party this year, and gosh, it always emotionally hits home but with the passing of Tom Noonan, it's just so surreal to be at the age where the In Memoriam montage is just full of the legends you grew up loving.
