But this alternate Link, he starts thinking. He couldn't save her then, but maybe he can save her now, and achieve some sort of peace in final moments.

He writes a letter, detailing the plan, hands it to the Link who'll be returning home.

This discovery makes him even more standoffish, and as the story progresses, some way, somehow, to get them home, a sacrifice has to be made.

None of them could possibly kill another person for something like this, so... it's put off.

Here they learn that he got to the Calamity just a little too late - Ganon is gone - but his Zelda is dead.

He's jealous, he's lonely, and he's lost.

that this alternate Zelda is just nowhere to be found.

They go to what WOULD be Zelda/Link's house, depending on how you interpret it, and its totally barren besides, you know, the bed. Theres just a lone silent princess on the bedside table.

If I could write;

Link and Zelda, and maybe some others, somehow travel to this alternate plane and meet another Link, but no Zelda

No rebuilding has been done, he deflects, projects, etc,

They go about trying to figure out how to get home, and the more they learn, the more it becomes apparent
