Treetop toilets may act as communication hubs across mammal species The strangler fig is a keystone species in the tropics, providing food and shelter, and a place to poop for 17 different mammal species.

I got to write about mammals pooping up in the branches of strangler figs in Costa Rica! This was SUCH fun.

A few things that didn't make it into the story:

Figure demonstrating how the ordering of temperatures through time determines whether an ectothermic population experiencing those temperatures will go extinct

Figure demonstrating how the ordering of temperatures through time determines whether an ectothermic population experiencing those temperatures will go extinct

Thrilled to share that my first dissertation chapter is now published at Ecology! dx.doi.org/10.1002/ecy....

We embed TPCs into population dynamics to show how changing temperatures' ordering — not just its distribution — increases extinction risk (i.e. heatwaves matter!)

Any ECRs interested in joining a journal editorial board? I’m leaving an associate editor position due to upcoming maternity leave and other commitments and am happy to offer suggestions to the journal for a relacement. Broad zoology remit, reasonable workload.

The strange animals that control their body heat Some creatures can dramatically alter their internal temperature — a strategy called heterothermy — and outlast storms, floods and predators

In humans, body temperature is strictly controlled, deviating only a degree or two from the standard 98.6 (although today's average human temp may actually be slightly lower), but many mammals are more flexible. I loved learning about heterothermy in lots of weird little mammals for this piece 🧪🦊

Extra food buffers thermoregulatory costs during early development but does not reduce heatwave-induced mortality in nestlings of a cavity-nesting raptor Global climate change is increasing both average temperatures and the occurrence of extreme weather events, such as heatwaves. Here, we tested if extra feeding lesser kestrel nestlings during development (and under a heatwave) can help them deal with extreme heat. Spoiler: they really struggle. Extra food helps them grow when it’s just hot, but not under a heatwave. See 👇

Send them a valentine.
