Also, congratulations everyone who made something this year. A comic, a song, a film, a novel, a painting, a poem, a short story, a sculpture, crochet, embroidery, whatever it is. In this era of slop and theft, if you *make* something you are a shining jewel and I am so grateful for you.

Everyone imitates Tolkien all the time except when it comes to the one way it would really matter: making the protagonist of your novel for children a short, fat, 50-year-old man who doesn't want to do anything.

If you use GMail, AI (Gemini) was turned on yesterday by default and now scans all of your content for machine learning. To turn off, go to Settings>General and scroll down. Uncheck the box for "Smart features."

There's other "Smart" add-ons as well, but that's the one that reads your content.

Many people have noted that the Primary / Social / Forums / Updates tabs are missing when you do this 👀. You can recreate these manually using the "Multiple Inbox" setup in settings. Basically, tell your inbox to include emails tagged "inbox" and exclude the social / forums / updates.

Good morning, my fellow writers and editors. Don't forget to take time today for your mental health and self-care. Smell the flowers. Stand up and stretch. Drink some water. Sacrifice something to the old gods...

Keep the positivity. You aren’t powerless. Rejection doesn’t mean you’re a bad writer. You have a good story. It’s worth telling.

Most of all: love yourself.

Or because they subtly and politely inquired about it.

The irresistible urge to not do something you were planning to do because someone told you to do it.

Looks happy now! Way happier than mine, ha! I think the rest of mine might be due for an upgrade... or an unfortunate early death.

A black and white illustration in printing ink and black crosshatched pen of a tree on a cold winters day. The tree trunk and its bare branches in dark silhouette against a grey background, a shaft of weak sunshine beyond the tree. A figure stands beside the tree. Dark and foreboding.

A black and white illustration of a large Victorian House situated on a small island in the middle of an estuary. Dark windows look out onto a misty and bleak scene, a figure of a man stands on a cart track or causeway leading up to the house. Bleak and atmospheric.

A black and white illustration of a woman in black funeral dress standing at the head of a fresh grave. A slash of white sky makes silhouettes of the woman and the surrounding headstones, the rear of a church and its arched stained glass window on the right of the illustration. A glimmer of sunlight reflecting off an estuary in the distance. A Yew tree arches over the cemetery, a gloomy grey sky above. Atmospheric and spooky.

I’m going to make a concerted effort to sell some of my original illustrations (and prints) for The Woman in Black this autumn. Autumn seems like the right time. Watch this space…

A selection of nine portraits - mostly commissioned by various clients as well as two personal pieces. They’re all done digitally in painterly style with visible brushstrokes and deep colours. There are vampires, vieras, elves, lizards, dragons and other humanoid but ethereal creatures.

It’s my birthday! 🎉 May I be so bold as to ask to share my art?

Below I’m going to drop some links (ko-fi tip jar, portrait commissions, contact for freelance) as all kinds of support are incredibly appreciated in these trying times! 💖

Box--box--box--box--packin' all my shit again!
There's no discharge in the move!

On a related note, I just watched 28 Years Later. Amazing trailer. And credit to the film: I've never seen so many swinging spines and dicks in one movie.

After moving twice in my adult life, I've learned:

1. I'm really good at tucking things into every available space

2. I have way more stuff than I ever imagined

and

3. I may be a hoarder

I'm not sure, but I think about two months of my life have been swallowed by moving house. I feel like I'm just emerging from a cave and everything is blindingly bright.

Darnelli painted in the style of William Waterhouse's painting 'Boreas'. She is holding a light blue cloth around her hair as the wind whips around her. She has dark skin, long wavy dark hair intertwined with light blue yarn, and freckles.

Yes! A great opportunity to show ingenuity with different character types and their unique ways of resolving these issues.

This has always bothered me. The constant flip-flopping of what's acceptable in fictional media from one end to the other. But why can't we have both ends, and everything in between? Variety is the spice of... fiction.

#WritingTips: Thesaurus Thursday!

While a very useful tool, please don't just say yes to every thesaurus suggestion. We've all seen that Friends episode.

Use a thesaurus as a discovery tool: have it point you to new words, then research those words to ensure they're appropriate for your uses.

My feelings exactly. Not a fan of the advice to never use a thesaurus. Use it, but use it wisely!

It's also useful for digging out those words you definitely have stored away already but your brain for some reason decided to lock up.

Synchronicity (aka coincidence forbidden in fiction but abundant in real life): When my (possibly autistic) 4 year old, who has lately grown very curious about homonyms, gets to choose our next bedtime read and what he pulls off the shelf is Rain Reign by Ann M. Martin.
