Stubby served valiantly during World War I alongside his owner, Corporal J. Robert Conroy. The Museum recently commissioned a reproduction of Sgt. Stubby, which will be unveiled at the event.

As the unofficial mascot of the 102nd, Stubby served in the trenches of France alongside other Connecticut soldiers for 18 months. During that time, he participated in four offensives and 17 battles, was wounded twice, served as a therapy dog, alerted his compatriots to mustard gas attacks, and even helped capture a German spy.

On April 20, 1918, the soldiers of the 102nd participated in the Battle of Seicheprey, the first significant military engagement in WWI involving American forces in Europe. Connecticut troops sustained heavy losses, and Stubby himself was wounded by a hand grenade. He recovered from his wounds and served as a therapy dog for other wounded soldiers. After the war, Stubby returned to New Haven, CT with Corporal Conway, where he lived a long life. His heroism during the war made him a celebrity and led to his promotion of sergeant, the only dog in American history to receive such an honor.

To help us tell the story of Connecticut’s contributions to World War I, the Museum of Connecticut History recently commissioned a reproduction of Sgt. Stubby from David Hayes Studio. At a special ceremony on Monday, April 20, 2026 – the anniversary of the Battle of Seicheprey – the Sgt. Stubby figure will be unveiled at the museum. Corporal Conway’s grandson, Curt Deane, among others, will share some remarks about this incredible Connecticut canine.
